Tyson Fury: My father wanted me to retire six years ago after my second fight with Deontay Wilder. But that’s all for me | Boxing News

Tyson Fury won’t let criticism from his father distract him ahead of his fight with Arslanbek Makhmudov.

Fury will return to boxing on Saturday after a year of retirement.

His father John Fury has publicly warned him not to return.

Fury admitted that his father had wanted him to retire once and for all a while ago.

“A father wants the best for his son. Six years ago he wanted to retire after (Deontay) Wilder II. Maybe he should have done that, maybe he shouldn’t have done that,” Fury told Sky Sports News.

“But at the end of the day, that concern comes from a father, from someone’s family, from someone’s blood. For him, there’s no financial benefit for me to fight. It doesn’t matter. But for me, that’s all that matters. It’s all that I’ve always done, that’s all that I’ve ever wanted to do, and to keep doing what I’ve always wanted to do until I’m done.”

It is unclear whether John Fury will feature in Saturday’s match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“If he had a great performance and he didn’t come, that’s great. It doesn’t make my performance better and if Mike Tyson was in the audience or somebody, that doesn’t matter,” Fury said.

“It’s been a while and I’ve missed it. Now I’m back. I’m bringing all this action back into the game.”

Sometimes it seemed like the boxer was slowing down the fight and making his opponent miss with every move.

Spencer Brown, who is promoting the event, has worked with Fury for many years. He is confident that this feud will not upset the former world champion.

“I don’t think so. I think John says that wholeheartedly, but if you had a son who was a boxer, would you say the same thing?” Brown told Sky Sports News.

“Tyson is at the twilight end of his career and we’ll see how much power he has. He probably wants to go a little further than we anticipated. That’s their job. This is a father-son situation, but they’ve been in worse situations than this before, and they’re back. John loves his son. He would die for him tomorrow.”

“That’s John. He’s a great guy,” Brown added.

“I know in my heart they’re going to make this up. That’s their job. I don’t get involved in their business, but everything will level out, as it always does with my sons.”
