Arne Slott and Liverpool are in trouble.
They face the toughest battle of any Premier League team aiming for a top-five finish after losing 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday.
Jamie Carragher said Slott’s tactics against Paris were “hugely wrong”. And the Liverpool manager will need to come up with a better solution when his side host Fulham live on Sky Sports on Saturday night.
With just two wins in their last eight games, the pressure is on the Reds. Man City’s crushing defeat in the FA Cup ended their chances of winning a domestic silver medal, and qualification for next season’s Champions League is by no means certain.
They currently sit in fifth place, which should be enough to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition. However, Chelsea are just one point behind, with Brentford and Everton just one win away from leveling Liverpool.
From Liverpool’s point of view, it is worrying that they will face the toughest final game depending on their league position.
Interestingly, both Chelsea and Brentford took the points they needed from their remaining opponents in come-from-behind matches to overturn Liverpool’s narrow advantage.
As a result, Opta’s season predictions give Liverpool only a 54.9% chance of finishing in the top five.
“If you won the league last season and spent as much money as Liverpool and you don’t qualify for the Champions League, I don’t think you have any legs to stand on,” Carragher said on Monday Night Football in February.
Slott points out that Liverpool can put in a big performance and win at Anfield, and that back-to-back wins against Fulham and PSG could change the narrative in a week.
Chelsea could also benefit from hosting in-form Man City at home this weekend, while Brentford host Everton at G-Tech.
But despite this, there are worrying statistics for Slott as the Liverpool side look for ways to get their season back on track…
Notable league results: Liverpool have won just four of their last 13 Premier League games.
Shooting trouble: Liverpool are second in the Premier League in terms of shots taken, but 16th in terms of shot conversions.
Late setbacks: Liverpool have conceded a league-high nine points this season for goals conceded after 90 minutes, including Fulham’s equalizer at Craven Cottage.
Fulham’s frustration: Liverpool failed to win any of their three Premier League games against Fulham under Slott. They are the only team he hasn’t lost to.
Too many losses: Liverpool have now lost 16 games in all competitions, the most in a season since 2014/15.
Since September 27, Liverpool have lost more Premier League games than they have won. Eleven clubs gained more points during this period.
What the fans are saying…
After Wednesday’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, we asked for comment on Liverpool’s club blog. We would like to introduce some excerpts from the opinions we received. …
Anfield Iron: It’s time for a change. It doesn’t work and the excuses are even worse than the performance. That’s enough. Please bring the passion back to this team. It’s terrible to see them now.
Mattymc5203: Slots were a real mess last night. Sadly, he sees from deep within himself. Should we replace him now or at the end of the season?
Danny: I’m grateful to Slott for winning the league title, but we have to remember that the team had the backbone of Klopp’s tactics. Since February 2025, Slott has introduced his game, but unfortunately his version has not been good enough and neither has his man management. It’s time to leave.
Ryfi: Liverpool have produced multiple winners in every competition. Just last season, they were considered one of the best or top two teams in world football. They signed Wirtz and Isak, two of the best players in the world at their respective positions. They shouldn’t lose to anyone.
JMY97: How long do you get paid for winning the league title? I’m grateful for last season, but at some point you have to think logically. Slots are tactically pushed to the limit. Xabi Alonso joins Steven Gerrard until the end of the season.
