Andy Robertson: Liverpool defender to leave club at the end of this season | Soccer News

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson will leave the club at the end of this season when his contract expires.

Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull in 2017 and has won two Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and two League Cups in nine seasons, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Community Shield.

Robertson, 32, has made 373 appearances for Liverpool and is second choice this season behind summer signing Milos Kerkes for £40m.

Robertson revealed that although he had had offers to leave Liverpool, it was difficult for him to leave. Tottenham had been in talks to sign the Scotland captain during the winter transfer window, but the £5 million deal fell through.

“Leaving a club like Liverpool is never easy. It has been a huge part of my and my family’s life for the last nine years. But for me, the players move on and others move on. What remains the same is the club and obviously the fans.”

“I’ve had a great nine years here. Especially in the last year or so, I had the chance to leave but I didn’t take it because of how difficult it would be to leave this club. I wouldn’t change that for the world.”

“But I know football moves forward, I know the team moves forward, and I think it’s time for me to move on. Wherever my next move is, wherever my career takes me, I’ll always look back on the great memories I have at this football club.”

“I’ve given my heart and soul to the club for nine years and I don’t have too many regrets. I’ve grown as a man and a person. This club will always mean the world to me and the fans will mean the world to me. It’s been a hell of a journey.”

Robertson left Anfield this summer, following in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah, who also joined Liverpool in 2017. Ibrahima Konate’s contract also expires at the end of this season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid last summer, Luis Diaz moved to Bayern Munich, and just as Jurgen Klopp’s prestigious Liverpool side continued to evolve, Diego Jota tragically passed away.

The contracts of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Joe Gomez expire in the summer of 2027.

Sky Sports David Richardson:

Andy Robertson will leave Liverpool this summer as a legend, but not bad for an £8m signing fee from Hull.

Robertson joked that he still reminds Jurgen Klopp about the limited opportunities the left-back was given after his debut. Robertson only played once in his first 12 games at Anfield, a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace, but he remembers being surprised to hear Liverpool fans singing his name that day. They felt he would do well.

Robertson has made 373 appearances for the club and has done more than just do well. He scored 13 goals, but his legacy is 69 assists. Sixty of those appearances have come in the Premier League, making him the second-most by a defender behind Trent Alexander-Arnold.

A distinctive feature of Klopp’s best teams was his partnership with Alexander-Arnold, attacking both flanks and exchanging diagonal passes, creating a flurry of chances for Sadio Mane and Mo Salah.

Robertson had been postponing his departure due to his relationship with the club, but the time has finally come. The energy that once defined his game can no longer be so relentlessly summoned and Liverpool must look to the future as they forge a new era. But they will never forget his drive, leadership and consistency that made him one of the best full-backs of all time.
