Reuters —

Indian singer Asha Bhosle, known for her diverse repertoire and energetic music in countless Bollywood films, has died in Mumbai at the age of 92, prompting widespread tributes.

Famous throughout India for generations, Bhosle gained international attention through his collaboration with British musician Boy George.

“Her extraordinary musical journey over the decades has enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts around the world,” said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Throughout her career, Ms. Bhosle has been nominated for two Grammy Awards and won India’s highest artistic award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and India’s second highest civilian honor, the Padma Vibhushan Award.

“Whether it was her soulful melodies or her vibrant songs, her voice had a timeless brilliance,” PM Modi said in a message about Bhosle X, whose career spans eight decades.

Bhosle, the sister of singer Lata Mangeshkar, was rushed to a private hospital in Mumbai on Saturday night due to chest infection and fatigue, her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle announced earlier.

Tributes poured in from across the art world for Bhosle, who sang in many Indian languages, including Marathi and Hindi.

“Her voice is one of the pillars of Indian cinema and will continue to resonate around the world for centuries to come,” Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan wrote in X.

Khan added that her talent will outlive many.

Actor Hema Malini said in ‘X’: “She made us sad because she gave so much vibrancy and personality to her songs.”

Her son Anand Bhosle confirmed her death to news agency ANI and said her funeral will be held in Mumbai on Monday.

Reuters could not immediately confirm details.
