Manchester City are thought to be offering support to Antoine Semenyo after the player highlighted further racial abuse he has suffered this season.
The 26-year-old posted on his Instagram Story earlier this week that it’s “again” with a screenshot of the comments sent to him.
During the season opener against former Bournemouth player Liverpool, Semenyo reported that referee Anthony Taylor stopped play and that he was racially abused by supporters. The Ghanaian international scored 2-2 and lost 4-2.
Mark Morgan, 47, was arrested and charged by Merseyside Police with Section 5 racially aggravated public order offenses, which he denied at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court in December. The trial is scheduled for April 22nd.
A Premier League spokesperson said: “We are appalled by the unacceptable racist abuse directed at Antoine Semenyo online and have offered our support to the player and the club.”
“Racism has no place in our game or in our society. It is clear that more needs to be done to address this issue and we will work with clubs, football bodies, law enforcement and social media companies to ensure this remains a priority for everyone.”
