‘Far from a classic as Arsenal grind out point’

If you’re expecting a grandstand Premier League final or a champagne performance from Arsenal, you won’t be getting one. The plan for Mikel Arteta within all of the build-up, buzz and importance of this one is to ensure that the game is far from a classic.

It’s a test of Arsenal and Arteta’s bottle. The biggest test. Arteta’s mistake in the past is that he tends to let his usually cool demeanour, switch up and become one that finds very little success in hiding his emotions under pressure.

But do not be surprised if that changes. The pressure isn’t on Arsenal as much as Manchester City will hope or Pep Guardiola will make out.

City have home advantage and are the form side heading into it, granted, but two of the three possible outcomes on the day suit Arsenal, while this is a must-win for Pep Guardiola’s side.

A point at the Etihad tends to be a good result at the best of times, but there will definitely be no shame in in earning a draw and playing for one for Arsenal.

There won’t be any champagne football because a draw for Arsenal at City will ensure the champagne can be saved for the parade in N5.

‘Eze key for Gunners’

We’re not expecting a free-flowing Arsenal display at the Etihad Stadium. Mikel Arteta’s team haven’t produced one of those in quite some time. But that doesn’t mean Arsenal cannot go there and take all three points.

Many are expecting a pragmatic display from Arsenal at the Etihad – which is not a criticism. Who wouldn’t turn up at City and be pragmatic first and foremost? But Arsenal have shown plenty of times they have the tools to hurt Pep Guardiola’s side.

The last meeting saw Guardiola’s side limited to just 32.8 per cent possession. Arsenal’s last trip to the Etihad saw them go behind, then fight back to take the lead – and they were seconds away from holding onto it with 10 men. In between those two league meetings was a 5-1 win for the Gunners.

Many will point to the Carabao Cup final as a pre-cursor to this game, but Arsenal will have a better team out than that Wembley outing. All the signs point to Eberechi Eze being a key player in this encounter. If Arsenal can get him flowing, their chances of victory improve.

With Gianluigi Donnarumma uncertain at defending set pieces, this is a chance for Arsenal to show who they really are, not who everyone wants them to be.

‘Timing right for a Man City win’

This is a matter of timing for me. It’s rare for a game of this magnitude arrive so late in the campaign with a title still hanging in the balance. For a neutral, that throws up the dream scenario whereby you expect, or rather hope, for a game befitting of its occasion.

But I can’t help but feel like this meeting at this juncture will not reach the thrilling conclusion most desire. No doubt Manchester City go in as hot favourites. Home advantage aside, form and momentum is with Pep Guardiola and his six-time champions. Mikel Arteta has hardly been a pillar of stoic leadership of late.

I’d like to see a battle for the ages, but my better judgement tells me this is likely to be more like a stubborn spat, decided by a one-goal margin. Arsenal are not obliged to go at City, it’s in their interest to be cautious. If they do rediscover their sense of adventure it could be much more fun but I won’t hold my breath.

‘Pressure is on Man City, not Arsenal’

Judging from what we saw against Sporting in midweek, it’s hard to see how Arsenal click into gear going forward ahead of the showdown with Man City without the likes of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard returning from injury.

But just like in the Champions League, the onus isn’t on Arsenal to win this game. In that respect the pressure is on Man City, who have to pick up three points to stay on track in their bid to haul the Gunners at the top of the table.

Expect Arsenal to be cautious at the Etihad and to rely on a defence that has racked up 15 clean sheets and conceded 24 goals so far this season, but keeping in-form Man City won’t be easy.

The Gunners will have to find a threat. They will have to try and land some sort of glove on City to at least make Pep Guardiola’s side wary because all out defence for 90 minutes against Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku, it ends with City findng a way to victory.

In recent seasons, when the Gunners have racked up second-placed finishes, many have called on them to go and win at their title rivals. City are rightly favourites for victory – they have been extremely impressive in recent weeks. However, this is Arsenal’s chance.

And while I don’t think they’ll have enough to seal victory, they can grab a point that keeps a first title in 22 years firmly within their grasp.

‘Arsenal will go to Etihad looking for a draw’

A monster match, where backing the bet no-one wants to back is the shrewd move. I’m all over the draw here at 13/5 with Sky Bet.

Arsenal’s problems are clear – they have scored just three goals in their last five games. Man City scored three goals in 17 minutes at Chelsea last weekend.

The Gunners’ attacking process has completely gone to pot, their frontline are in such stale form. One of the biggest factors in all of this is the absence of Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka. The difference in output when Odegaard and Saka both play to when at least one of them is missing is stark. Since the start of last season, Arsenal’s goals per game drops from 2.1 to 1.3 without both Saka and Odegaard starting and their expected goals per game goes the same way too, nosediving from 1.9 to 1.3.

Mikel Arteta would snap your hand off for a draw right now. Arsenal have to play to their strengths and that is their world-class defensive unit without the ball. Do what you’re good at. Arsenal should be trying to shut this game down, make it hard for City to score and win set pieces.

They will come for the draw and at the prices, I’m happy to back them to get it.

‘Experience will tell against nervous Gunners’

The contrasting events of last weekend present a strong indication of how Sunday will pan out.

Arsenal do not travel to the Etihad as overwhelming favourites as they did against Bournemouth but the weight of two decades’ worth of expectation to end their title drought remains.

It was evident in the fear running through that defeat to the Cherries, with the league reaching its crunch point and such little margin left for error – even less now.

A repeat performance littered with the same anxiety, heavy touches and mishit passes in such a must-not-lose game would likely prove fatal against another side who will press from the front.

Both sides will fall back on past experiences where Arsenal cannot help but be haunted by past failures while City are a juggernaut in the run-in. Pep Guardiola has not lost a league match in April in five years for a reason.

City issued themselves and the league a reminder with the second-half performance at Chelsea. Any team can have a nervous 45 minutes but where Arsenal failed to get out of their funk at the Emirates, City breezed to victory with three goals in 17 minutes to relieve any nerves at Stamford Bridge.

Guardiola knows how to pull his team out of a slide, his squad have been here and done it before and he has players with the flair to hurt any team when feeling confident. Arsenal are not currently displaying any of those qualities.

Their current lack of cutting edge isn’t necessarily a problem but can they keep City out for 90 minutes? With the flair of in-form Rayan Cherki and goals of Antoine Semenyo and Erling Haaland in City’s front three, it is a tall order.

‘Defensive approach will work against Arsenal’

Everything points to a Manchester City win on Sunday. Arsenal come into the game in a strange place. You would not know they are six points clear at the top of the Premier League and into the Champions League semi-finals for a second-year running.

The title race is set up for Mikel Arteta to take a defensive approach at the Etihad. Arsenal have put themselves in a position where a draw would be almost as good as a victory while City must win to keep their hopes alive. That dynamic might work against Arsenal, though.

The numbers suggest that taking the game to City would be more advisable. No side has gained fewer points from losing positions than Pep Guardiola’s in the Premier League this season. Newcastle share bottom spot with City, having won three points after trailing.

Because so much has been made of Arsenal proving their title credentials, we are almost forgetting the inconsistencies of this iteration of City. Arsenal are not coming up against the same side that turned them over 4-1 at the Etihad in April 2023.

In fact, that was the last time City beat Arsenal in the league. Arsenal have won two of previous five encounters in the competition and drawn the other three. That should be enough encouragement to at least give it a go on Sunday.

The fear, however, is that Arsenal will sit back and set up to defend. Mentally and emotionally, this feels like a dangerous approach in the context. Arsenal need to make a statement with their performance at City to get over the line.

If Arsenal, as expected, approach the game seeking a draw, City will take the game by the scruff of the neck after a tense, goalless first half in a repeat of last month’s Carabao Cup final. It is hard to see how Arsenal score if they persist with their negative approach.

‘Third straight Etihad draw will leave title destiny in Arsenal’s hands’

Everything points to a Man City win this weekend, especially the momentum Pep Guardiola’s side have gained since beating Arsenal relatively serenely to claim the first piece of silverware of the season at Wembley in March.

City’s aggregate scoreline in their last three games, all in different competitions, is 9-0 thanks to impressive and dominant victories over Arsenal in that Carabao Cup final, at home to Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals and then at Chelsea in the Premier League last time out.

Arsenal, in stark contrast, have really struggled for fluidity and rhythm of late, with the attacking side of their game having seemingly hit the buffers at the worst possible time with the big prizes set to be handed out.

They are the ones who look out of form, whereas in comparison, City look carefree and happy to embrace the challenges ahead – but that will all change on Sunday, though, with the home side being the ones who need to take all three points to stay in control of their title destiny.

That is where the Gunners’ superior defensive qualities will make the difference, as they also did on their last two trips to the Etihad, when Mikel Arteta’s team left with hard-earned draws in March and September 2024 (the latter even with 10 men for the second half) – and back them to make it three in a row on Sunday to take control of the race for the Premier League.
