Spurs 2-2 Brighton

Tottenham’s hopes of remaining in the Premier League were dashed by Georginio Rutter’s brutal 95th-minute equalizer as in-form Brighton won a 2-2 draw in north London, leaving Spurs in the relegation zone.

Roberto de Zerbi was preparing to celebrate his first win as Spurs manager and a gentle curler from Xavi Simons could have helped push his team above the dotted line.

But instead Kevin Danso was robbed in his own box by Jan Paul van Hecke. Van Hecke teed up Rutter and fired a leveler, knocking Spurs players to the floor and silencing the home fans. It was just as they were about to enjoy their first Premier League victory in 2026.

Georginio Rutter scored Brighton’s late equalizer against Tottenham in the Premier League.

Spurs will now spend another week in the bottom three, with potential relegation to the Championship facing scrutiny from critics and anguish from supporters.

They are one point behind West Ham and vulnerable to their local rivals, who extended their advantage with a win over Crystal Palace on Monday Night Football, while Nottingham Forest could widen the gap to Spurs to five points if they can play Burnley live at home on Sky Sports on Sunday.

Xavi Simmons scored a fantastic goal in the Premier League against Brighton to put Tottenham back in the lead.

Simmons’ goal appeared to be a turning point in Spurs’ bid to remain in the Premier League. A moment of enthusiastic celebration at the launch. In fact, the failure to cross the line and win reinforced the impression that this team was only progressing in one direction. A win against Wolves, the bottom club in the Premier League, next weekend is essential.

After a harrowing moment when Micky van de Ven kicked the ball against his own post under pressure from Danny Welbeck, Spurs took the lead in the 39th minute when Pedro Polo was the surprise scorer for Tottenham’s first goal under De Zerbi.

Pedro Polo scores Tottenham’s opening goal in the Premier League match against Brighton.

The right-back had not found the back of the net in his previous 49 Premier League games, but he made a huge leap forward against De Zerbi’s old club, nodding in a brilliant chip pass from Simmons.

Player evaluation

Tottenham: Kinski (6), Polo (7), Danso (5), Van de Ven (7), Udogi (6), Bentancur (6), Gallagher (7), Bisouuma (6), Symonds (7), Kolo Muani (5), Solanke (6).

Subs: Gray (6), Tell (6), Parinha (6), Spence (6), Bergvall (7)

Brighton: Verbruggen (7), Wiefer (6), Van Hecke (8), Boscali (7), Kadioglu (6), Ayali (6), Gross (7), Gomez (6), Hinshelwood (6), Minte (7), Welbeck (6).

Subs: Mitoma (7), De Kuiper (6), O’Reilly (6), Rutter (8), Kostoulas (6)

Player of the match: Jan Paul van Hecke (Brighton)

Simmons should have made it 2-0 shortly after with a shot that hit the post, but Bert Verbruggen made a lightning save to overturn Polo’s onslaught. And Spurs, like so many times before, paid the price for not capitalizing on big chances.

Spurs continue to wait for Premier League title in 2026

Tottenham are the only team without a win in the Premier League in 2026, having failed to win in 15 games (D6 L9).

Simmons gave Pascal Gross too much space to cross, and Kaoru Mitoma was able to volley home to level the score in first-half stoppage time.

In the Premier League match against Tottenham, Brighton equalized with Kaoru Mitoma’s exquisite volley.

Spurs’ nerves and frustration accelerated in the second half, when Conor Gallagher’s charge at Verbruggen spun the ball wide of goal and Joao Parinha’s shot was deflected away by Danny Welbeck and failed to beat the Seagulls keeper. Things didn’t go the Spurs’ way. Until Simmons’ magic moment.

The release was highlighted. Simmons was also with the fans. With his shirt off. And he stood there in the advertising warehouse, arms outstretched and jubilant.

But the best record the Spurs have ever had will be one of their worst. Danso made a mistake. Van Hecke, Rutter and Brighton overcame uncertainty. Their pursuit in Europe remains strong. The Spurs’ race will almost be decided.

team news

Spurs made four changes from their defeat to Sunderland, bringing in Xavi Simmons, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma and Kevin Danso. The latter replaced injured captain Cristian Romero. Brighton were unchanged from the team that beat Burnley.

De Zerbi: “We deserved to win – I’m proud of the players”

Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi said on Sky Sports:

“I’m sorry for the result and for the players, because they’ve suffered so much. We deserved to win the game against a great Brighton side. I congratulate them hugely on their style and the level of their players. But we couldn’t have conceded Rutter’s goal at that point in the game.”

“I’m positive, but I’m proud of the players because they played a great game in this stadium, for this club, full of character and spirit, which is what I want from my players.

“We have to be stronger than this result, we have to move on and prepare for the next game against Wolverhampton and try to win the game.”

Spurs can’t turn lead into victory

Tottenham Hotspur have failed to win any of their last five games (D3 L2) in which they led the Premier League, their longest streak since December 2023 (D1 L4).

Dawson: “Brighton’s goal was very avoidable for Spurs”

Michael Dawson of Sky Sports:

“It’s very disappointing, not just because they didn’t win the game, but because there were so many positives in the way they played. But to take the lead twice and concede two goals to Brighton… from a Spurs point of view, I’m devastated by the way they conceded.”

“When they went up 2-1 I thought: ‘This is our chance to turn our fortunes around and climb out of the bottom three. Get ahead of West Ham and put pressure on them.’

“And then there was one mistake by Danso, who switched off in the last moment of the game. You are a centre-half and you cleared the lines and did everything you could to get out of here with a win in this game of football.

“And this is going to feel like a big two point drop…”

Match story in statistics
