Gerwyn Price won the European Darts Grand Prix with an 8-6 win over Ross Smith in Sindelfingen, becoming only the second player in history to win double-digit titles in Europe.
The victory in Germany was Price’s 10th title, making him second in history behind Michael van Gerwen for winning 10 or more titles.
But it was another heartbreaking moment for Smith, who reached his fourth EuroTour final but suffered yet another defeat.
In the final, Price took an early 3-0 lead with a double break, but Smith also got two breaks to tie the score at 3-3, and there wasn’t much difference between the two.
The key moment came in the 11th leg, when Price found another break in his throw as Smith strayed into a double and led 6-5.
That was in full evidence as the Welshman continued to pitch better and further rounded out his European victory in D12.
Price will be looking to build on this historic victory, especially as he faces Jan van Veen on Night 12 of Premier League Darts in Liverpool on Thursday, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
“I think both me and Ross probably tried a little too hard in that game,” Price said.
“We both had great tournaments and I was struggling to get over the win line.
“Thankfully, we won this time, so I think I’ll be a little more confident going forward.
“I have been working at PDC for about 12 years, and once a year on average is not that great. So we need to step up our ideas.
“Liverpool in the Premier League has a tough game coming up next against Jan van Veen, but now I can go into it with confidence and I can take advantage of this.”
Price defeats Niziman and Schindler to advance to finals
Price defeated Wessel Nyman 7-4 to once again reach the EuroTour final.
Both players were in good form and it showed in classy face-offs, hitting each other big for both runs and spectacular doubles, with their throwing holds being masters of the game.
The key moment came in the eighth leg, when Price found the only throw break of the match, sealing a two-leg advantage that proved to be too much for the Niziman to overcome.
Gerwyn Price also held off a raucous partisan crowd as he won a thrilling 6-5 final match against Martin Schindler.
The German crowd was right behind No. 1 and his double gave them joy.
But when Price took three legs on a spin and quickly returned to the contest, he countered all of Schindler’s clutch moments to clinch the win on D5.
Smith defeats Ratajski and Aspinall
Smith defeated Krzysztof Ratajski 7-5 to advance to the final.
Although Ratajski was scoring well, he completely failed in doubles, failing 15 of 20 attempts in the outer ring.
This allowed Smith to take an early lead and cross the line while keeping the “Polish Eagle” a short distance away.
Smith started the night with a resounding 6-4 victory over Nathan Aspinall in the quarterfinals.
It wasn’t as impressive as expected as Aspinall was unable to perform at his best throughout the afternoon, but Smith’s double was strong enough to break his opponent’s throw and persevere to beat D2 and advance.
Knoppert clicks the flight and pulls Ratajski up.
Meanwhile, Ratajski earned a tense 6-5 victory over Danny Knoppert in the quarter-finals, with the ‘Polish Eagle’ holding his own in the final deciding moments of the leg.
Knoppert was somewhat annoyed because he believed Ratajski was ticking the flight while waiting to throw, but Ratajski said he was shocked after the game when “The Freeze” brought it up because there was nothing there.
“I had no expectations because I had never heard of it,” he said.
“It was my fault. I was in shock and didn’t know what was going on, so I missed three darts on the double after this.”
Elsewhere, Nyman started the night with a first win over Michael van Gerwen, but finished below the ‘Green Machine’ as almost every other dart seemed to fail.
Three breaks in eight legs meant that Niziman’s average of 83 points was more than enough for the Dutch up-and-comer to defeat the Dutch powerhouse.
