At least one person was killed and several others injured in a shooting at Mexico’s Teotihuacan pyramid, Mexico’s Security Cabinet announced Monday.

According to preliminary information, a man opened fire at the popular monument, killing a Canadian woman, before taking his own life, the Cabinet announced on X news agency.

Authorities said they seized firearms, knives and live ammunition at the scene.

At least six people were injured, four from firearms and two from falls, and were receiving medical treatment, the state of Mexico said.

Mexican state security chief Cristobal Castañeda told reporters that the injured included two Colombians, one Canadian and one Russian. He said the situation is now under control.

CNN has reached out to Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Colombian embassy and the Russian embassy for comment.

The shooting comes as Mexico faces intense security scrutiny as it prepares to welcome millions of tourists to this summer’s World Cup.

Videos on social media show gunshots heard near Teotihuacan’s Pyramid of the Moon and people fleeing the area.

Teotihuacan is a major archaeological and tourist destination in the state of Mexico, approximately 30 miles northeast of Mexico City. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the vast archaeological zone is home to several monuments, including two towering pyramids.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said federal, state and local authorities were responding to the issue.

“What happened today in Teotihuacan deeply hurts us. We express our deepest solidarity with those affected and their families. We are in contact with the Canadian Embassy,” she said.

Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was in touch with other embassies to provide the injured foreigners with the necessary assistance.

Mexico State Governor Delfina Gómez also offered support, sending “solidarity to the families of those affected by what happened in Teotihuacan.”
