Arne Slott is expected to remain Liverpool’s head coach next season as the club moves closer to qualifying for the Champions League, according to Sky Sports News.

Doubts over the Dutchman’s future appear to be quickly subsiding, as a seven-point gap has opened between fifth-placed Liverpool and sixth-placed Chelsea.

After Arsenal reach the semi-finals, a fifth place finish will secure them a place in next season’s Champions League, but while Chelsea are slumping, Liverpool are improving.

Slott, who led Liverpool to the Premier League title last season, is under pressure during his second season as the Reds end the season trophyless, leaving them well off the pace of Arsenal and Manchester City.

But Carragher said on Monday Night Football: “The Arn Slott job has been talked about all season. We’ve talked about it a lot on Monday Night Football.”

“Liverpool supporters are probably divided as to whether he should stay or go, but what I’m hearing is that if we qualify for the Champions League, Slott will be the manager of Liverpool next season, which they seem to be aiming for now.”

Sky Sports News understands the situation comes after a season of heightened speculation over Slott’s future, with frustrations on and off the pitch during a transitional period at Anfield.

Slott is expected to maintain support in the hierarchy ahead of the summer, when the team is expected to receive more work following the announcement of Mo Salah’s departure.

RB Leipzig’s Yann Diomande is the top target for a new forward, with other positions also being considered.

Van Dijk gives honest assessment of Liverpool’s ‘substandard’ season after derby win

Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool still need to improve despite winning the Merseyside derby against Everton at Hill Dickinson. The Liverpool captain scored late in the game to put the Reds in a strong position to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Liverpool must play two of the top five teams in their bid to qualify for the Champions League, and will also face sixth-placed Chelsea.

Virigur van Dijk heads home with dramatic 100th minute win in Merseyside derby!

“We have five games left against teams competing for Champions League qualification,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports after the derby win.

“Every game is an important game. We’re having a season and overall I’m very disappointed because our quality is below standard.

“But we have to keep fighting, keep moving forward and make the most of this disappointing season. That’s the reality and we move on. Everton have three points and next up we’re at home to Crystal Palace, a team we haven’t beaten in any number of games.”

“In my opinion,[the situation]is definitely not suitable for Liverpool, but it is what it is and it was important to get the win. I’m glad we got the win.”
