An all-British heavyweight showdown in the UK is moving closer to reality, with promoter Eddie Hearn revealing plans are afoot for Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury to finally meet on their home soil.
Mr Khan said he was “hopeful” that Saudi boxing boss Turki Alarusik would choose Britain as the venue for the much-anticipated bout, scheduled for November and touted as the biggest fight in the country’s history.
Although no contract has yet been signed, Mr Hearn confirmed that negotiations were in the final stages.
The fight follows Joshua’s return fight in July, setting up what Hearn described as “not the fight of the century, but the greatest fight of all time” for British fans.
Fury and Joshua had an altercation at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this month, reigniting excitement and raising expectations for a matchup that has failed numerous times in the past.
Mr. Hahn said that the remaining contractual details have largely been worked out, and that subsequent production decisions will be left to Mr. Alarusik.
Hearn told iFL TV: “We will have a contract, we haven’t signed the contract yet, but we are negotiating the final points towards an agreement to return to the ring in July and fight Tyson Fury.”
“Once you sign that contract, it will be up to (Torki) to direct it. We (Matchroom) will be promoting it in July. I think Serra will be promoting it, whether it’s the November fight or whatever.”
“Me, AJ and Tyson Fury are going to have a deal where basically (Alarcik) will finance the fight. It’s up to him where that goes.”
“Now he also wants to make history. He’s not going to put it in a random place. He wants this fight to tell the fans what it is. It’s the biggest fight in the history of our country. I want this fight to take place in England.”
The move for a British showdown comes after Fury and Joshua exchanged words at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 11, reigniting speculation about a domestic showdown that has failed numerous times in the past.
Hearn added that Joshua’s July fight is still being finalized, adding: “The good news is that if we do a fight like this, we have a contract to fight Tyson Fury. All we have to do is bite our nails in 36 minutes in July. That’s not going to get us the fight of the century or the greatest fight of all time.”
Fury had previously warned Joshua not to delay his warm-up bout despite facing Arslanbek Makhmudov, but Hearn said the decision was influenced by the undisputed champion.
“I’m sure they wouldn’t mind me saying it. A lot of this talk is coming from Oleksandr Usyk. He’s been part of these conversations and the conversation was definitely about him having a comeback fight,” Hearn said.
Spurs? Wembley? Cardiff? – AJ-Fury’s position becomes complicated in November
While fans may be one step closer to the fight they’ve been waiting for for more than a decade, Hearn’s latest news raises important questions. where will it take place?
For a fight of this size, there is a huge demand for in-person attendance and huge revenue potential, making only the largest stadiums a realistic option.
Wembley Stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have a history of hosting major boxing events, but with the dates set for November, neither venue has a retractable roof, presumably necessary to protect both fans and fighters from the elements.
Of course, Spurs held a rematch between Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr in November 2025, when supporters endured temperatures that were barely double digits cold.
The stadium has quickly become one of the world’s largest boxing venues, but with British winters so unpredictable and unforgiving, promoters would be wise to consider alternative venues.
If Hearn were to fulfill his desire to continue fighting in the UK, Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, with its fully retractable roof and history of hosting Joshua’s world title defenses against Carlos Takam and Joseph Parker in 2017 and 2018, stands out as the obvious choice.
Beyond that, options for continuing large-scale fighting on British soil appear limited. And unless all requirements are met, there remains a real possibility that the match will be played overseas and contested by both Saudi Arabia and the United States.
