Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesco supported Bruno Fernandes to win the Premier League Player of the Year award, while also praising his captain’s influence.

Fernandes is one of the favorites to win the award after his impressive spell with United. The 31-year-old has provided 18 assists in the Premier League this season, leaving him two behind the record for a single season in the top flight since 1992.

Four of Sesco’s nine Premier League goals during his debut season in England were assisted by Fernandes. Sesko said he is grateful for the opportunity to be around his captain.

“I’m also taking a lot of instructions from Bruno,” Sesco told Sky Sports.

“Every training, after training, sometimes before training. Whatever he says, just do it and don’t think twice. And that’s what I said. I really appreciate this opportunity to be around him.”

Asked further about whether he thought Fernandes should win the Premier League Player of the Year award, Sesco added: “He’s great. He’s my teammate. And of course he always stands up (for his teammates), so yeah, he should win.”

United are inching closer to a return to the Champions League, with six points likely enough to put them in the top five.

This run has given Sesco a lot of confidence and he believes the team has the ability to win big trophies.

“I think we’ve been great. We still have a few games left, but I think we’re doing great. There’s great spirit in our team. We’re learning a lot from this experience. We’ve got great players here, great coaching staff.”

“I really want to achieve some trophies here. I think there are things in life that you can never forget. And of course we need to do a lot for that, but I believe we are capable of doing it.”

Carrick says it’s because of “freedom” that Bruno is able to grow.

Paul Pogba thinks Bruno Fernandes would be in the top three for the Ballon d’Or if he played for Manchester City

Speaking live on Sky Sports ahead of Monday Night Football at Old Trafford, United’s caretaker manager revealed the secret to Fernandes’ form. Fernandes has scored three goals and provided nine assists since Carrick returned to the club.

“I think we gave Bruno (Fernandes) a platform to perform as well as the other players,” Carrick said in a press conference.

“I think we’re trying to build a structure and a team that allows everyone to get the best out of it. There are obviously limits in terms of everyone having to make some sacrifices for the good of the team, but I like to see Bruno have a little bit more freedom in attacking positions.”

“Again, he obviously plays for the team and has a big responsibility within it.

“And I thought he did as well as he ever did, especially on Saturday, not having the ball and not doing any defensive work.

“So he has a big responsibility in that, but trust him, trust him, you know, he’s a very good player. He sees things, he’s creative. He’s got a really good mind. He’s a big part of the group as well, he’s a big influence.

“So a lot of that is just trusting him and trying to put him in a position where we think he can actually make the biggest difference in terms of the different qualities that he has.”
