England fast bowler Josh Tan hit five fours on the opening day of Nottinghamshire’s County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
Tan took 5-91 from his 22 overs and helped Warwickshire fall to 140-5 in the first three matches, but the hosts’ lower-ranked side rallied late in the day and found themselves at 375-8.
Ed Barnard hit a superb unbeaten 134 and shared a century stand for the seventh wicket with Chris Woakes (64) before Tan cleaned up the latter to take the fourth wicket.
John Simpson completed his unbeaten run as in-form Sussex made an impressive start against Yorkshire at Headingley.
Sussex are looking for their third win in a Division One match this summer and finished the opening day at 373-6, with Simpson (101st) and Tom Price (93rd) putting on 165 runs for the sixth wicket.
For Yorkshire, Jack White was the outstanding bowler with 3-42, while England star Joe Root took a catch at first slip in his first appearance of the summer and bowled 18 runs in five off-spin overs.
Paul Walter was introduced on the opening day at Keir Oval and blunted Surrey’s five-pronged pace attack for almost five hours against a patient 101 as Essex reached 325-6.
Former South African Test opener Dean Elgar also batted with great skill and determination, hitting 92 in a first-wicket stand of 183 with Walter, initially giving Surrey momentum.
However, Surrey fought back in the second half of the day with six wickets, including four inside from the 71st over to the 17th over.
The ending of Kyran Carlson and Shaun Dixon in the tense 90s was enough to give Glamorgan a positive start going into the game against Leicestershire.
The hosts finished with 334-7 thanks to a 126-run partnership that held steady after an early slump, with Karlsson (95) and Dixon (90) taking advantage.
Ian Holland (2-19) and Josh Hull (2-70) were successful with two wickets each, while Ajaz Patel (1-111) bowled 30 overs on the opening day in the absence of Rehan Ahmed, who joined Delhi Capitals in the IPL.
Crowley’s struggles continue for Kent
Zak Crawley’s hopes of retaining his place in England’s Test opener were dealt a further blow as his disappointing start to the County Championship season continued at Kent University’s clash with Division Two side Worcestershire.
The 28-year-old hit six fours on his way to 27 at New Road, before moving forward with a full ball from Matthew Waite and blasting it past the wicketkeeper.
It was Crawley’s highest score of the season after the ninth, 20th, 26th and fifth, as his chances of remaining in England’s first Test against New Zealand in June continue to dwindle.
Kent were eventually bowled out for 196 and Worcestershire replied with 94 for 1 at Stamps on the opening day.
Lancashire’s Marcus Harris’ second century of the season defied Durham’s pursuit of a wicket on a spellbinding opening day at Chester-le-Street.
The morning session was an even affair with Durham taking three scalps from Lancashire despite a series of dropped catches, with Harris one of the beneficiaries.
The Australian made gains throughout the afternoon, taking his 35th triple-digit pass in first-class cricket in the evening session, but wickets continued to roll at the other end, with Ben Lane (3-71) picking up three of them as Durham inch away.
However, Harris remained unbeaten on 135 and Lancashire came close at 356-7, giving the visiting team the edge.
England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir was among the wickets for Derbyshire, but Miles Hammond orchestrated Gloucestershire’s counterattack late on the first day of the Division Two match.
Hammond shut down the visitors with an undefeated 140 innings, his first championship century since July 2024, while Ed Middleton scored a career-best 41 points with no outs to lead the visitors to 287-6.
Bashir finished with 2-51, but Hammond and Middleton had a successful final session to end the match on a positive note.
