Chelsea moved closer to qualifying for next season’s Champions League with a Sam Kerr double as the Women’s Super League champions beat Everton 4-1.

At Goodison Park, Kerr took an early lead with his trademark finishing, but Yuka Momiku equalized for the home side with one of his goals of the season.

Chelsea took control of the match after half-time, scoring again with a goal from Kerr, and goals from Ellie Carpenter and Erin Cuthbert secured victory for Sonia Bompastre’s side.

The twin strikes took Kerr to 63 WSL goals for Chelsea, equaling Fran Kirby’s total for the West London club and equaling forward Kerr’s record.

Kerr: Chelsea’s goal is to qualify for the Champions League

Chelsea striker Sam Kerr:

“There’s still a lot to play for.

“There’s still a league left, but we want to qualify for the Champions League, that’s the most important thing.

“Today the main goal was to get three points.”

On equaling Chelsea’s WSL goalscoring record, she added: “Even if you’re in the same conversation with a player like Fran (Kirby), she’s a legend at this club, a legend in this game and someone I’ve played some really good football with.”

“Just to be on the same level as her is amazing.”

Bompastor: Cars make a big difference

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastre said of Sam Kerr’s performance:

“Sam (Kerr) deserves what’s going on with her, she’s a great player.

“She’s also a great human being, and today’s performance showed she’s one of the best in the world.

“It’s fun to work with her. She’s growing and wants to learn to help the team. She’s a team player and having a player like her makes a big difference for a coach.”

The three points keep Chelsea in second place, six points behind leaders Man City, but more importantly, Mark Skinner’s side are now four behind third-placed Manchester United after a disappointing goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur thwarted their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

7pm kickoff

It could have been even worse for the visiting team, with Spurs recording 22 goal attempts in the game. Arsenal sit one point behind their rivals with three games in hand and United look certain to fall out of the top three in the league, with their first game being at home to Leicester City on Wednesday night, which will be broadcast on Sky Sports.
