Ipswich leave top door open, Boro dream still alive for now
West Brom 0-0 Ipswich | Middlesbrough 5-1 Watford | Leicester 1-1 Millwall
Not for the first time this season, just when you expected Ipswich to put their foot on the gas and move forward, they stumbled again.
Although West Brom were in good form, the scoreless draw left the door ajar for the chasing teams. A win would almost guarantee promotion in midweek, but for that they need to beat Southampton. Judging from recent matches, the competition for promotion is heading into its final days.
After the match, Kieran McKenna said: “I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. We’ll find out next weekend.” He’ll probably come up with a good idea on Tuesday night when he works full-time at St. Mary’s University.
Even better was the fact that Millwall were unable to beat relegated Leicester on Friday night, despite fighting back late on to earn a 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough will desperately wonder why the scoring touch they found against Watford has been evaded for so long recently. They defeated the Hornets 5-1.
There have been a few more performances like that recently, but Boro are still a respectable second and would probably be promoted by now.
“We came from a position last week where we really felt like we had nothing to lose,” coach Kim Helberg said. “It probably felt like it was gone, but if Ipswich don’t win their next game, it’s going to be a do-or-die game on the last day of the season.
“When that happens, you never know. A lot of things go into a game like that. “Hopefully Southampton can take at least a point from Ipswich and then we’ll have an exciting final day of the season.”
Defeats to Hull and Wrexham made for a frantic final day in the battle for sixth place.
Charlton 2-1 Hull | QPR 2-3 Derby | Coventry 3-1 Wrexham
Final day drama is always guaranteed in the championship and that will happen on Saturday with the battle for sixth place tense.
Hull City were the first to fail. Defeat at Charlton at lunchtime meant they missed the chance to take back sixth place from Wrexham.
Sergei Yakilovich conceded goals practically at full time. But he may have just been playing a little 4D chess. Because he must have known that no matter what happened, there was still a chance on his side.
Wrexham then lost to champions Coventry on Sunday and were unable to extend their advantage, with only goal difference separating the Red Dragons and Tigers. In reality, there is only one goal.
There is a possibility that 6th place will be decided based on the match results, and Hull has an advantage as they have won both matches this season.
Phil Parkinson said after Wrexham’s 3-1 defeat at the CBS Arena: “We knew goal difference was important so we wanted to win the game but at the same time we had to make sure we were ahead of Hull on goal difference.”
“The third goal is an unfair reflection on the game, but we are still ahead of Hull on goal difference. It’s all about the game and we have a chance to get over the line next week.”
But if neither side wins, Derby could swoop in. They came within one point and then secured a late win against QPR on Saturday, staying in the race thanks to Jadon Bunnell’s superb goal late on to make it 3-2.
West Brom safe again! While Charlton finished his work while Oxford collapsed.
West Brom 0-0 Ipswich | Charlton 2-1 Hull | Oxford 4-1 Shef Wede
As a club, it’s not often that we celebrate safety twice in one week.
But that’s what West Brom and their supporters had to do. They got over the line with a 3-0 win over Watford on Tuesday night. A few days later, he was deducted two points and was once again in potential crisis.
Saturday’s scoreless draw against Ipswich saw results come back again. The Buggy family breathed a sigh of relief.
West Brom manager James Morrison said after the game: “It was cloudy, but the clouds are finally starting to lift.” “We knew where we were. We knew the news, but we focused on the football side. The players were in a really good position so we just tried our best.”
The same goes for Charlton Athletic. Who has been chasing one more big result for weeks to avoid trouble? On Saturday, a great strike from Charlie Kellman gave us a 2-1 win over Hull.
Despite keeping the Addicks in the league, manager Nathan Jones remained remorseful. He said, “It’s the best performance we’ve ever had, but I also feel a little disappointed. I think we should be better than we are now.”
He will want to make sure they continue to grow next year.
And those two results in Saturday’s lunchtime game meant Oxford would suffer the heartbreaking pain of relegation before ever getting a chance to take the field, joining Leicester and Wednesday’s Sheffield in League One next season.
However, plenty of credit goes to Matt Bloomfield’s part. They ended their two-year stay in the Championship with a strong 4-1 win on Wednesday, on a high at home.
