Who will be selected for England’s Women’s T20 World Cup squad? Will Davina Perrin take part? Will Tammy Beaumont appear? Lauren Filer or Issie Wong? |Cricket News

England women’s head coach Charlotte Edwards will announce her T20 World Cup squad on Tuesday, but she has some difficult decisions to make.

England head into the World Cup at home under mounting pressure. They have not qualified for a T20 World Cup since 2009 when they last hosted a T20 World Cup, were eliminated in the group stage in 2024 and have not won the ICC trophy in any format since 2017, when they won the 50-over World Cup at home.

Although they have struggled to maintain their form of late, they will be optimistic that glory is just around the corner.

But for that to happen, Edwards will need to get his team selection right, finding a balance between youth and experience to ensure England achieve their goal of winning the World Cup for the first time in 17 years.

For Sky Sports Cricket’s Charles Dagnall, the lack of international experience for exciting up-and-comers such as Davina Perrin and Tillie Corteen-Coleman could mean bright future stars miss out on an “underperforming” England team that is firmly under pressure.

Davina Perrin shares her thoughts on signing for The Hundred Auctions for the first time and what the competition has meant for her career.

“If I had a time machine, I would argue that would be great, because I would have liked to have seen Tillie Courtteen-Coleman and Davina Perrin[getting their caps sooner],” Dagnall said.

“I want to meet Caris Pavelly, I want to meet other players who are knocking on the door, Kira Chatri is one of them.

“We have seen performances at The Hundred and in the women’s national competitions that confirm that.

“But they don’t really have that international experience, so why would they put a young player in a home T20 World Cup where there’s a lot of pressure?

“You can say they (England) haven’t performed in the last three or four years, but they haven’t performed in the last 10 years.

Match highlights as New Zealand beat South Africa by 32 runs in the Women’s T20 World Cup final, giving the White Ferns their first win

“This is one of the best-resourced and best-paid teams in world cricket, if not the women’s sport. And they have only appeared in one World Cup in this cricket since 2009.”

“So my point is that the pressure is really on and the bare minimum here is not just a final. We have to go win. This is our home World Cup.”

“I don’t think they would (choose Davina Perrin). (But) I would like to see them do that and I would be excited to see Davina Perrin.”

Relive the moment England were eliminated from the Women’s T20 World Cup as the West Indies celebrated. Heather Knight burst into tears.

Whether Edwards will be bold enough to bring in some in-form young players is up for debate, but Dagnall believes there are seven players who could definitely secure a place in Edwards’ team.

“At the top of the order we have Danny Wyatt Hodge, I think she’s an absolute certainty and we have a pretty good relationship. We’ve seen her score points so far this year at Metrobank.

“Heather Knight, Nat Silver-Blunt and Amy Jones are the top four.

“Then I think Charlie Dean, Sophie Ecclestone and Lauren Bell. For me, Lauren Bell is the best opening bowler in world T20s at the moment.

“So these are my seven clear conditions.

“And we have a bunch of players who will probably make up the rest of the squad, depending on what direction England want to go.

“Right now they might want to play three seamers, three spinners. They might want to play four and two.”

Who is your backup keeper?

Jones will once again go into the World Cup as England’s No. 1 wicketkeeper, but Dagnall believes Tammy Beaumont, with her extensive experience on the international stage, will be a familiar member of the team if she is injured.

“We are choosing experienced Tammy Beaumont as our backup keeper,” Dagnall added.

“Kira Chasli is kind of knocking on the door. Beth Heath has been knocking on the door for quite some time. But are we going to lean towards a home World Cup, players that we know who have that experience and that pressure, and have gone there and done it?”

“I don’t think she’s a first-team player in a T20 side. I know she wants to be a first-team player, but I don’t think that’s the case.

“But she’s someone who can come in and you know what you’re going to get from Tammy Beaumont.

“She is the perfect person to succeed Kira Chatri, who had a good year with The Hundred and was very impressive with London Spirit last season.

“I think they’re probably going to go with Tammy Beaumont.”

Lauren Filer or Issie Wong?

Oval Invincibles’ Meg Lanning finds herself in deep water trying to chase London Spirit’s total in The Hundred

With Lauren Bell, Sophie Ecclestone, Charlie Dean and Nat Silver-Brant providing bowling options in Dagnall’s expected side, the question arises as to who else could fill those roles.

If Lindsay Smith is used as the other spin option, along with Dani Gibson, Em Arlott, and Freya Kemp, the question arises as to whether to include Issy Wong or Lauren Filer as the other quick option.

For Dagnall, the answer is Wong thanks to her ability to cope with the situation and her ability as an all-rounder.

Lauren Filer hit back-to-back hits from Sarah Blyth and Emily Windsor to batter the Welsh Fire 65-6.

“I think they’ll choose Issy Wong just for the fact that she’s a three-dimensional cricketer,” he said.

“She was the number three batsman on the women’s final day of the Vitality Blast and scored a half-century in the semi-final.

“She’s a big game player and you’ve seen her work in those situations. I think they’ll lean towards Wong over Filer because she’s played in big moments for England and she’s a mainstay on the field. He really gives us a little bit of pace.”
