President Trump claimed he had a “great phone call” to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about the impending tariffs.

US President Donald Trump has given the European Union until July 4 to comply with a proposed trade deal or the US will raise tariffs within the region.

President Trump’s announcement on Thursday followed what he described as a “great meeting” with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“I have been patiently waiting for the EU to implement on its side the historic trade deal, the largest trade deal ever agreed at Turnberry, Scotland!” President Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

The 27-nation bloc has yet to finalize a trade deal.

“A promise has been made that the EU will implement its side of the agreement and reduce tariffs to zero in accordance with the agreement. I have agreed to implement the agreement until our country’s 250th birthday, otherwise, unfortunately, tariffs will soon jump to an even higher level.”

President Trump on Friday threatened to raise tariffs on EU cars and trucks from 15% to 25% following claims that the EU is not adhering to the terms of the agreement. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), the automotive sector accounts for 8% of all trade between the United States and the European Union.

Under the framework’s original terms, the United States was to impose a 15% tax on most goods imported from the EU, not just cars and trucks.

But since the Supreme Court ruling, the administration has imposed 10% tariffs, aiming to impose new tariffs to make up for lost revenue while investigating trade imbalances and national security issues.

According to President Trump, the two leaders also discussed Iran and agreed that Iran would never have a nuclear weapon.
