Gus Atkinson was substituted off against Surrey and county champions Nottinghamshire after failing a concussion test and being the brunt of England team-mate Josh Tan’s bouncer barrage.
Both fast bowlers are likely to be selected for England’s first Test of the summer against New Zealand next month, but Tan may have inadvertently damaged Atkinson’s chances at Trent Bridge.
A few of Tang’s mean bodyguards stood up and slammed Atkinson’s helmet. Atkinson left the field after being at bat for nearly an hour and was replaced in Surrey’s batting line-up by Reece Topley.
Concussion rules will disqualify Atkinson from Surrey’s tour of Yorkshire starting on Friday, but this was supposed to be his last chance to get his red-ball form back together before joining up with England.
The Tongues finished with 4 hits for 89, but Dan Lawrence’s 104 RBIs dwarfed Surry’s 449, and the first inning lead was 34 points, but that lead disappeared as the hosts closed in at 1-99 and Ben Duckett went undefeated with 35 RBIs.
Josh Tan is also in contention to be selected for England’s first Test of the summer against New Zealand next month.
Matt Critchley’s quickfire 90 not out helped Essex beat Division One bottom-placed Hampshire by six wickets at Chelmsford.
Essex, at a set 177, surged to 40 for 3 thanks to Kyle Abbott as Critchley strode towards the crease after Hampshire were skittled for 214 with Simon Harmer’s 66 for 4 in the second.
Critchley hit 15 fours in an incredible 73-ball knock and Abbott claimed his fourth wicket, but a lack of support (Hampshire are without Sonny Baker this week) meant the visitors were eliminated.
Warwickshire are on the verge of a big win against Yorkshire, who were shut out at 5-98 after being tasked with chasing down a nominal 549 points at Edgbaston.
Sam Hayne’s 164 not out gave the Bears a declared 553 for six, and after Ethan Bamber got Yorkshire’s top three in single figures, Harry Brook was caught and bowled by former Yorkshire all-rounder Jordan Thompson, and Jonny Bairstow was bowled by Ed Barnard, leaving Whiterose reeling.
England hopeful Asa Tribe scored his third half-century of the season but was one of the casualties as Glamorgan fell from an unbeaten 81 to 140 for 5 while chasing 283 against Somerset in Cardiff.

Middlesex could only chase just 117 points with six wickets to spare as Lancashire surrendered for 84 all out from 3 for 48, inflicting Sir James Anderson’s side their second defeat of 2026.
Gloucestershire captain Cameron Bancroft’s 83 points gave the team a 249-point lead against Kent in Bristol, but Northamptonshire went all-out with 228 points, forcing Derbyshire, who scored an astonishing 604 points from seven attempts, to chase them down. Northamptonshire were shut out with 2-66, but were still 310 points behind.
