Jake Paul may never return to boxing as he continues to recover from a stoppage loss to Anthony Joshua in December.
Social media star Paul became a professional fighter in 2020, but when he faced Joshua late last year he gained even more weight and the level of his opponent improved significantly.
Paul has primarily boxed at cruiserweight, and in Joshua he faced the former two-time unified heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist.
Joshua knocked him out in six rounds. Paul suffered two fractures in his jaw and subsequently required surgery to have two titanium plates fitted and some of his teeth removed.
Paul is still not allowed to spar again, let alone box. He even speculated that he might never fight again.
“I’m going to have a new scan of my jaw in the next few days to get an update on the healing process. Let’s see what the doctors say,” he said on The Ariel Helwani Show.
“Do you think we’ll be able to know a more precise timeframe or even fight again? It’s definitely in the realm of possibility.
“As the weeks have gone on, I’ve been feeling a lot better, but I always have to get permission to do any sparring. I stay in shape and enjoy the mitt work. I’m always in the gym regardless.”
Is his boxing future in doubt?
“Absolutely,” Paul said. “I think it depends on how the bone heals, but since he’s also missing a tooth, he’ll definitely have to have some type of implant.
“I don’t know how much time it will save you, but you have to decide what’s smartest for you.”
