The 2026 NFL season will begin on September 9th with a Super Bowl rematch, with the champion Seattle Seahawks taking on the New England Patriots.
In February, the Seahawks defeated the Patriots 29-13 to win the franchise’s second NFL title. The 2026 season opener will be held on Wednesday night in the United States, and will be the third time that teams that played in the Super Bowl will meet again in Week 1.
The NFL season opens on Wednesday for the second time in league history, with nine international games played on four continents, starting with the Week 1 game between the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams on September 10 in Melbourne, Australia.
The Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants will play in the first Sunday night game of the season, and the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs will play in the first Monday night game.
“It was definitely an important data point for us,” NFL executive Hans Schroder said of the Week 1 matchup between the 2025 Super Bowl opponents.
“We saw what a big draw it was and thought it was really fun. I think it’s been 10 years since we played Denver vs. Carolina in Super Bowl 50 and went back in Week 1 the following year.
“We thought it would be a fun way to restart the season with New England in Seattle after the Super Bowl. There was certainly a lot to play. Let’s let the fans see if they play again.”
Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills hosted Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs for a tripleheader on Thanksgiving night. Chicago Bears vs. Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles vs. Cowboys matchups were previously released.
The Eagles will play the Houston Texans on Christmas Eve, and a tripleheader on Christmas Day will feature the Green Bay Packers vs. Bears, Bills vs. Denver Broncos, and Los Angeles Rams vs. Seahawks.
The two Boxing Day matches have not yet been decided.
Sixteen of the league’s 32 teams will play at least one of their 17 regular season games outside the United States.
London will host three international matches, while Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro and Paris will host their first matches.
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will once again host two games on consecutive weekends in October, with the 2025 champion Eagles taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, October 11th.
Wembley will also host a game a week later on Sunday, October 18th, between the Texans and Jaguars.
