A New York state judge on Monday blocked prosecutors from using some of the evidence found in Luigi Mangione’s backpack when he was detained by police at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania shortly after his murder. united healthcare Manhattan CEO Brian Thompson.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Gregory Caro said that because Mangione’s backpack was not adequately maintained when Altoona police detained him, “evidence found during the search of the backpack at McDonald’s, including a loaded magazine, cell phone, passport, wallet, and computer chip, must be suppressed.”
However, Caro ruled that the 3D-printed gun suspected of killing Thompson and the diary in the backpack, which was later cataloged at police headquarters, can be used as evidence.
Mr. Mangione is accused of fatally shooting Mr. Thompson, 50, on a street in midtown Manhattan in December 2024, as the 50-year-old insurance company CEO was on his way to an investor event for UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group.
