Oura launches smallest smart ring ever

Oura announced its latest smart ring on Thursday. This is smaller than what any company offers.

Oura Ring 5 will be 40% smaller than Oura’s previous generation rings, the company says. It said the ring maintains the same level of sensing, tracking and accuracy as previous generations.

“We’ve finally achieved what I think is a true technological miracle,” Oura CEO Tom Hale said in an interview with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin on Thursday. “This is something our members have been asking us for years,” he said. “This was a technical challenge. There are physics involved in the size of the battery and the ability to package all the electronics and sensors. It’s so small that it has a different shape,” he added.

The ring, which begins shipping on June 4th, is priced at $399 for the base finish and $499 for premium finishes such as gold and brushed silver. The company will also launch a portable charging case for the new Ring for $99.

“I’ve been wearing it with the cover on for six months, going to the gym and training in it, and I didn’t even feel it in my body. I think this is the first step in building a truly transformative wearable,” Hale said.

Oura has been named to the CNBC Disruptor 50 list four times, including #14 in 2026. Last week, Oura confidentially filed a draft IPO prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company did not disclose the IPO schedule.

The company will be releasing some new tracking and health features alongside Ring 5. These features also work with Oura’s 3rd and 4th generation rings. This includes an expansion of proactive health tracking, now called Health Radar. This feature monitors important biological signals such as body temperature and breathing rate, examines the strain on your body, and alerts you if it tracks significant deviations. New features include tracking blood pressure patterns during sleep, which can detect warning signs of cardiovascular risk and nighttime breathing patterns and disturbances, Oura said.

Oura has also partnered with Counsel Health, an on-demand healthcare platform, to provide AI-enabled care. Oura members can ask health questions, get personalized advice and connect with health care providers in the Oura app. Oura said the feature will be available in 43 states in the United States.

It also adds the ability to better track live activities such as running and cycling, as well as GLP-1 insights features that help users taking these weight loss drugs track dosing schedules, weight, and body changes along with biometric data collected by the ring.

Oura’s evolution from a simple tracking device to a wearable that focuses on preventive and predictive care as well as broader health and wellness has allowed the company to expand its user base beyond those who simply want to track their sleep. Last September, Oura announced it had sold more than 5.5 million Oura Rings since the product’s launch, which is higher than the 2.5 million the company said it had sold as of June 2024. Hale told CNBC late last year that the company could reach revenue of nearly $2 billion in 2026.

The company recently reported that it expects to have more than 5 million paying members this quarter, a fourfold increase over the past two years. This has resulted in a four-fold increase in total revenue over the past two financial years.

“We cried,” Hale told CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin. “We’ve grown this business tremendously,” he said, citing an 80% membership renewal rate.

Last October, the company raised $900 million in a Series E funding round, giving it a valuation of $11 billion. The company has raised more than $1.5 billion in total.
