President Trump is weighing next steps on the Iran deal, as Tehran insists negotiations are ongoing and there is no final deal.

Published May 30, 2026May 30, 2026

The prospects for a deal between the United States and Iran to end the conflict remained uncertain on Friday, with President Donald Trump saying he would make a “final decision” on the deal but Iranian officials stressing that no understanding had yet been reached.

Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said Iran would judge any deal by actions, not words, adding that it would not take any steps unless the United States acted first.

Meanwhile, fighting continued in other parts of the region. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said dozens more civilians were reportedly killed or injured in Israeli attacks across Lebanon on Friday, and that Israeli forces had advanced beyond Lebanon’s Litani River.

Here’s what we know:

Iran says talks continue but no deal yet: Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghai stressed that although exchanges with the US continue, no final agreement has been reached. He rejected an approach based on President Trump’s demands, saying the U.S. naval blockade was illegal and adding that Tehran would judge any easing of restrictions by actions, not words.

CENTCOM Highlights Ongoing Regional Patrols: U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) shared images of F-16 fighter jets on patrol over the Middle East and said the force is “present and alert” across the region. US urges allies to increase defense spending: Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said President Trump plans to invest $1.5 trillion in defense, part of a historic expansion of the US military industrial base. Hegseth urged allies to spend at least 3.5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defense, warning that countries that failed to do so could face changes in their relationship with the United States. He also reiterated that the United States remains committed to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Washington praises Israel-Lebanon security talks: The Pentagon said military-to-military talks between Israeli and Lebanese delegations in Washington were “productive” and focused on regional security and stability. The Department of Defense also reaffirmed its support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

in the US

Uncertainty remains after White House meeting: In a report from the White House, Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher said that even after President Trump’s Situation Room meeting, there is still no clarity on whether a final deal has been reached with Iran. Fischer said easing restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz could be a sign of progress, but officials were still waiting for specific details from the White House.

in israel

Air raid sirens sound in northern Israel: The Israeli military says it intercepted several projectiles fired from Lebanon and that another projectile landed near Kiryat Shmona in northern Israel. The military reported no casualties and did not say whether the projectile was a rocket or a drone.

in lebanon

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israeli forces have crossed the Litani River: Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu says Israeli forces have advanced north of the Litani River near Nabatiyeh, signaling an expansion of operations in southern Lebanon. The move comes amid ongoing negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, which could lead to further attacks in Beirut and the western Bekaa Valley.
