At least five people were killed in Israeli airstrikes and drone attacks in southern Lebanon on Saturday, Lebanese state media reported, just hours after a ceasefire between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group took effect.

State news agency NNA said Israeli warplanes and drones carried out a series of attacks across the Nabatieh area overnight and into Saturday morning, destroying homes and houses, and Israeli artillery shelling pounded Nabatieh and its suburbs before dawn.

Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire on Friday following escalating fighting in Lebanon, U.S. officials said.

A senior Israeli official and two Hezbollah officials confirmed the agreement to Reuters. US officials said the ceasefire would begin at 4pm (4pm Japan time) on Friday.
