disney’s The “Toy Story” series is still a hot topic.

The fifth film in the Pixar film series grossed $160 million during its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing film in series history. Overseas, “Toy Story 5” grossed $152 million, bringing its three-day worldwide box office gross to an estimated $312 million.

Toy Story 4 earned $120.9 million upon its release in 2019, the previous record holder for the series, according to Rentrak data. The film series has grossed more than $3 billion at the global box office since the first film was released in 1995, with two films each grossing more than $1 billion worldwide.

“Toy Story 5” had the second-highest opening for an animated film in 2018, behind “Incredibles 2,” which earned $182.7 million domestically.

Approximately 11.5 million movie fans went out to see Toy Story 5 over Father’s Day weekend, according to data from EntTelligence. And more than a quarter of audiences opted for the more expensive premium large-format screening. IMAX Domestic ticket sales were reported at $11.5 million and worldwide at $18.4 million.

“Toy Story 5” continues the strong trend of family-friendly titles in theaters, as nearly 70% of ticket buyers were part of a family group.

“It’s another great summer weekend with the huge debut of Toy Story 5, a film that appeals to every conceivable audience and becomes the ultimate four-quadrant movie,” said Paul Dergarabedian, Head of Marketplace Trends at Rentrak.

For the past two years, PG-rated family films have outperformed PG-13 and R-rated films at the box office, according to Rentrak data.

Additionally, animated features typically don’t get ahead of box office sales. In other words, animated productions gain word of mouth and generate steady ticket sales during their theatrical run.

“Disney and Pixar have orchestrated a perfectly timed, perfectly marketed film that captivated audiences and critics alike, and is now set to play in theaters for weeks with certainty, aiming for more than $1 billion in box office revenue worldwide,” Dergarabedian said.
