Hungarian police arrested a 30-year-old man. Investigators claim he collected human body parts from abandoned cemeteries and the hospital where he worked.
Hungary’s National Investigation Agency arrested the man in Budapest on June 17 after receiving information that he had kept body parts at his workplace and home.
Police said in a statement Tuesday that the man works at the hospital.
Investigators who searched the man’s apartment seized a skull, complete lower limbs, hands and even a reconstruction of a human face made from facial skin. Other bones were found stored in a suitcase.
Hungarian police say a man arrested in Budapest is suspected of digging up graves in Hungary and Slovakia.
A heart in a jar was also found, and police are investigating whether it came from a human or an animal.
During interrogation, the man admitted to collecting human body parts and stated that he was particularly attracted to human body parts and used to make and eat food from them.
He is being held on suspicion of unlawful use of a human body.
Police said in a statement that the man “has a passion for anatomy and pathology and loves dissecting animals.”
They suspect he obtained the body parts through his work at a hospital and by exhuming bodies in “abandoned cemeteries in Slovakia and Hungary.”
Police seized the man’s computer, laptop, tablet, mobile phone, SIM and data card.
Police said all recovered body parts will be examined by forensic experts, adding that the scope of criminal charges could expand if the source of all body parts is determined.
