The U.S. government on Friday gave Anthropic permission to release its Mythos 5 model to a group of about 100 companies and federal agencies, according to multiple media reports.

The decision marks a major step forward in negotiations between the Trump administration and artificial intelligence companies, which have been at odds for two weeks over the latest models.

“We have worked diligently to protect our security while ensuring America remains a world leader and AI,” a Commerce Department spokesperson said in a statement to Reuters and Semaphore.

Anthropic announced earlier this month that it had revoked access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models to comply with an export control directive from the government, which cited “national security authorities.” The company announced that it had been directed to terminate all access “by foreign nationals, including Anthropic’s foreign employees, whether in the United States or abroad.”

Anthropic’s senior staff flew to Washington, D.C., to meet with members of the Trump administration to try to find a way to get the model back online. The company told CNBC earlier this month that both sides are “working quickly to resolve the issue.”

“Since the publication of my June 12 letter, Anthropic has been working with the U.S. government to address the risks associated with the covered models,” U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick reportedly said in a letter to Anthropic.
