Ukrainian drones attacked a major oil refinery in the western Siberian city of Omsk, in what appears to be one of Kiev’s deepest attacks on Russian territory since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The attack started a fire at the facility, about 2,500 kilometers (1,553 miles) from Ukrainian territory and near the Russian-Kazakh border, Ukraine’s military general staff said on Monday.
The attack, confirmed by local Russian officials, was further evidence of Kiev’s growing long-range drone capabilities and came on the eve of a tense NATO summit. Leaders from 32 countries are scheduled to take part in a two-day conference in the Turkish capital starting Tuesday.
“Today, our long-range sanctions reached the Omsk refinery, about 2,500 kilometers from Ukraine,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in his daily evening address, according to a translation.
“With improved Firepoint drones, Siberia has reached precision firing range of Ukraine. This is a significant blow to Russia’s oil economy and an important achievement for the Ukrainian military,” Zelenskiy said.
Kiev-based Fire Point is a leading Ukrainian defense technology company specializing in drone and missile systems for modern precision warfare.
According to the Ukrainian military, the Omsk refinery is the largest of 11 Russian gasoline producers targeted by Ukrainian forces.
The facility is estimated to have a refining capacity of more than 21 million tonnes of crude oil per year and specializes in the production of a variety of fuels, lubricants and petrochemicals.
Omsk region governor Vitaly Khotsenko said via Telegram on Monday that emergency services were working at the scene following the Ukrainian attack on the facility. No casualties were reported as a result of this incident.
President Trump meets with Presidents Putin and Zelensky
Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russian oil facilities in recent months, seeking to deplete President Vladimir Putin’s war chest as the Kremlin’s more than four-year war drags on.
Ukraine’s president said on Monday that his army was also able to attack Russian oil facilities in the Yaroslavl region and other parts of the neighboring country.
Russia launched a barrage of missiles and drones into Kiev early Monday, killing at least 19 people, authorities said. The attack followed another deadly attack in the Ukrainian capital last week.

US President Donald Trump spoke separately with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over the weekend and said on Monday that a resolution to the conflict is “closer than people think.”
President Trump is expected to meet with Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara.
