On Saturday, July 4th, masked members of the white supremacist group Patriot Front marched through Washington, D.C., injecting extremist rhetoric into celebrations celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.
A photo of the group taken by Cheney Orr for Reuters captured the world’s attention. It depicts a woman riding the subway surrounded by Patriot Front members.
“As I was taking pictures of the members of the group, I noticed that the woman in the image was sitting alone among the members,” Orr said.
Patriot Front is considered one of the most active white supremacist groups in the country, according to experts interviewed by CNN, including its social media activity and steady drumbeat of public demonstrations. The Southern Poverty Law Center has designated Patriot Front a hate group. Its members often appear in matching uniforms and masks, often carrying riot shields and flags in choreographed marches in cities across the United States.
As they marched through the nation’s capital on Saturday, they shouted slogans such as “Life, Liberty, Victory” and “Take Back America!”
