fast casual chain chipotle pepper plans to open its first restaurant in Mexico this week, the company announced Monday.
The store will open on Thursday in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo Leon, part of the Monterrey metropolitan area. Chipotle said the opening is part of the Mexican restaurant chain’s previously announced partnership with restaurant group Arci.
Chipotle said Thursday’s opening will be the first in a major expansion of the restaurant in Mexico, including an expansion into Mexico City in 2027.
“We enter Mexico with deep respect for Mexico’s culinary traditions and a commitment to providing the best Chipotle experience,” CEO Scott Boatwright said in a statement. “Our research reinforced our belief that there is strong interest in high-quality, freshly prepared food with the customization and convenience that Chipotle offers.”
Chipotle plans to open another 350 to 370 new restaurants this year as it seeks to regain growth after a slow year and lure customers with new menu offerings. International expansion through partnerships is part of that strategy.
The company said it chose the Monterrey region because of its “robust economy, growing population, and position as one of (Mexico’s) major business and innovation centers.” The new restaurant will offer the same menu as existing locations in the United States.
Chipotle and Arci signed a Mexico development agreement last year as the U.S. chain entered the market. The company currently operates more than 4,100 stores around the world, including countries in the Middle East and Europe.
