On Monday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were directed to stop most traffic stops after an ICE agent shot and killed a man in Biddeford, Maine.
The major shift in tactics also came days after federal agents shot and killed a Mexican immigrant during a traffic stop in Houston.
But on Wednesday, President Donald Trump ordered the suspension to be reversed.
The man who died in Maine was Joao Sebastian Duran Guerrero, 25, a food delivery driver from Colombia. He was authorized to work in the United States and had been issued a Social Security number, according to the Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition.
The Department of Homeland Security issued its first public statement about 12 hours after the shooting, saying ICE agents fired shots “out of fear for public safety” as Duran Guerrero “attempted to flee the scene” in his car. He was not subject to enforcement.
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, was a Mexican immigrant who was shot and killed in Houston. Like Duran Guerrero, Salgado Araujo was also not the target of the deadly ICE operation.
Their killings have sparked protests and renewed protests against the Trump administration’s heavy-handed tactics in cracking down on immigration.
