Bluesky’s AI assistant Attie expands into an open social research tool

Attie is Bluesky’s AI assistant that lets you build custom social feeds without programming and has evolved into an open-ended research tool.

The company announced this week that it is adding a new feature to its AI assistant called Quests, allowing users to ask the AI assistant for information and news spread across the broader Bluesky social network, nicknamed Atmosphere. This includes not only Bluesky, but also apps that integrate with the underlying AT protocol.

Bluesky’s user growth has slowed over the past eight months. The social network doubled its user base to 40 million people in just over a year last October, and now reportedly has around 45.6 million registered accounts. So the company has been looking at developing tools and services that could expand its user base and potentially monetize it.

Launched in March, Attie is another product by Bluesky that allows users to design their own algorithms, create custom feeds, and in the future, vibecode their own apps. The AI assistant will be free for now, but the company is considering the idea of charging for the service.

Quests adds new features to Attie, allowing users to ask open-ended questions and explore what’s going on in this part of the open social web. For example, you can ask Attie to get information about trending topics or help you identify the most influential accounts in a particular field or location, the company said.

“Attie’s AI is a tool that helps us understand the internet and helps us combat the spread of misinformation and noise by giving us the tools to find the truth for ourselves,” wrote Jay Graeber, Bluesky’s chief innovation officer, who stepped down as CEO of the company in March. (She was replaced by Toni Schneider, former founding CEO of Automattic.)

“Our bet is that tools that help people understand the world will prove more useful than tools that fill the world with confusion,” Graeber wrote. “We want Attie to reduce the barriers to entry and expertise needed to learn how to use the AT protocol, and give everyone who wants the tools to customize their experience.”

Graber said Attie has been redesigned to add accessibility features and a new logo, and more changes are expected in the coming months.

At this time, the new Attie experience is in beta, and users will be invited from the waiting list in the coming weeks.

Although many Bluesky users tend to dislike AI for economic, political, and environmental reasons, the company has to balance community trends with the need to generate revenue to help itself, and the AT protocol development it leads will continue.

Blue Sky announced in March that it had raised $100 million in funding that will close in 2025. This has given us a runway to experiment with ideas like Ati and how AI can play a role in the atmosphere, as well as other services such as premium subscriptions and tools for power users.
