Altman to meet with White House’s Wiles ahead of AI framework deadline

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told CNBC on Wednesday that he plans to review a proposed framework for implementing President Donald Trump’s executive orders on artificial intelligence and meet with Chief of Staff Susie Wiles while in Washington this week.

Wiles is one of President Trump’s closest advisers and one of the key officials helping shape the administration’s approach to AI policy. Altman is scheduled to meet with various Trump administration officials, lawmakers and economists this week to discuss OpenAI’s future model, cybersecurity and the U.S. position in the global AI race.

The Trump administration has taken a more active role in regulating AI since President Trump signed a long-awaited executive order in June. The order required AI companies to voluntarily provide their models to the government to evaluate their capabilities before full release, but did not provide specific details.

President Trump gave federal agencies 60 days to develop a framework to actually conduct these assessments.

Altman’s visit to D.C. coincides with the fast-approaching August 1 deadline, and he won’t be the only one meeting with tech executives and lawmakers this week. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is on Capitol Hill to discuss the open model and “America’s leadership in AI,” a spokesperson told CNBC.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and several Senate Democrats met with Mr. Altman on Wednesday. Altman told CNBC that he and Cruz talked about “what it takes for the U.S. to remain competitive with AI.”
