President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that his press secretary, Caroline Levitt, will leave her post by the end of August.

Leavitt, 28, is stepping down, saying, “I completely understand and respect your decision to spend more time with your beautiful young children and family!” President Trump said this in a post on Truth Social announcing his plans to resign.

The president said Levitt will be “one of my top outside advisers” and will work with Republicans to win the midterm elections scheduled for November.

Ms. Levitt, who has served as White House press secretary since President Trump returned to the White House in January 2025, has two young children with her husband, real estate developer Nicholas Riccio.

She gave birth to her daughter, Viviana, on May 1, just days after going on maternity leave.

“Becoming a mother and welcoming a new baby while working one of the toughest jobs in the world has been the most rewarding yet challenging season of my life, to say the least,” Leavitt wrote in a post on X.

“The truth is, ever since I returned to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I could not be the best mother my two young children deserve with the unrelenting time, energy, and attention required of the White House press secretary. That is why I have ultimately made the difficult decision to leave the White House and embark on a new chapter in my life,” she wrote.

Mr. Levitt is the youngest White House press secretary in history.

During President Trump’s first term (January 2017 to January 2021), there were four White House press secretaries.
