Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday in New York federal court to stalking charges that led to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione’s plea comes weeks before jury selection is scheduled to begin in the New York state court trial in which he is accused of killing Thompson on a midtown Manhattan street in December 2024.
Mr. Mangione’s lawyers are expected to argue that his guilty plea Friday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan means he cannot be prosecuted in state court for Mr. Thompson’s murder under New York state’s double jeopardy law. Double jeopardy prohibits a defendant from being charged twice for the same act.
In response, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office may argue that the case against Mr. Mangione is not directly related to the same conduct charged in federal court.
After a court hearing in February, Mangione yelled, “One plus one equals two.”
“It’s double jeopardy by any common sense definition,” he said.
