Live updates: US-Iran war. Yemeni ports suspend operations as Hormuz standoff continues

Saturday was the deadliest day for Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon since the tenuous ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon was renewed at the end of June, with at least 11 people reported killed in the attack.

In a post on X, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called the strike an “escalation” and “a very serious problem.”

Israel and Lebanon agreed to the latest ceasefire nearly two months ago. The cease-fire agreement was brokered by the United States and continues talks between the two governments aimed at beginning the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon. The agreement allowed Israel to continue its operations in certain areas of southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah rejected the deal just days after Israeli forces agreed to a new ceasefire with Israel following one of Lebanon’s deadliest days in which four Israeli soldiers were killed in a Hezbollah attack that killed at least 47 people in Lebanon.

The deal was supported by US President Donald Trump, whose efforts to ease tensions with Iran have long been jeopardized by continued fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

A few days later, Israel authorized the continuation of military operations in southern Lebanon, attacking buildings in Nabatiyeh and Meyfadun. The IDF called them “Hezbollah command centers,” but the militant group claimed they were residential areas.

However, none of the ceasefire agreements signed since April have successfully ended the fighting in Lebanon.

Earlier this month, Israel issued its first evacuation order in southern Lebanon since June and launched new attacks on the area as Lebanese and Israeli officials met in Rome to solidify ceasefire terms.

U.S.-brokered talks ended sooner than expected after the attack, but resumed the next day.

CNN’s Elise Hammond, Alejandra Jaramillo, Eyad Kurdi, Sana Noor Haq, Eugenia Yosef, Oren Lieberman, Hanna Ziadi, Kara Fox, Dani Qarni, Ibrahim Daman and Jennifer Hansler contributed reporting.
