Two people were killed in a shooting at a high school in the southern Philippines on Tuesday, the second such incident in the country in nearly two months, authorities said, and the situation was now under control.

The shooting incident occurred at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University School in the southern city of Zamboanga. The city’s mayor, Kaymar Adan Olaso, told DZMM radio that both victims were students and that one was the gunman who used a “high-powered firearm.”

The university’s president, Ernaldo Andal, confirmed that there were no further shooting incidents and that there were no additional deaths or injuries reported.

“At this point, we can confirm that the number of deaths is two,” Andal said. “There are no active shooters anymore.”

Andal said the university is coordinating with authorities and will provide further details as information becomes available. “We don’t want this to happen. We want to prioritize the safety of all our students,” he said.

The incident follows an attack at a public high school in Tacloban City in June, when two classmates opened fire inside the school, killing at least three students and injuring about 20 others.

The shooting occurred less than 10 days after a high-profile incident in Thailand in which a student opened fire at a school on the outskirts of the capital, Bangkok.
