Google on Wednesday announced a slew of new learning tools across Search and Gemini, including AI-generated interactive visuals, 3D simulations, a dedicated student hub, customized practice quizzes, and more.

The launch of the new learning feature marks Google’s latest push to make Gemini the AI assistant students rely on to learn and study, as it competes with education startups like OpenAI, Knowt and Gauth, which also offer their own study and practice tools.

Search now allows students to generate custom tools and simulations to help them understand complex topics. For example, if your students are learning about pH levels, when they search for “pH scale,” AI Overview provides interactive visuals to help them understand the basics.

You can also go further and add more specialized questions, such as plotting citrus fruits on a pH scale. The AI mode of search creates an interactive experience tailored to your question.

Users can now get customized practice quizzes on any subject, including science, math, humanities, foreign languages, and more, right in search. For example, if a user enters the prompt, “Create a quiz using the most commonly tested vocabulary to help you prepare for the SAT,” the search will generate an interactive quiz.

In the coming weeks, Lens in Search will roll out new interactive learning experiences to help students tackle problems. When you tap the “lens” camera icon in the Google app and upload a photo of your work, AI can explain concepts, identify potential mistakes, and provide guidance if you get stuck.

Additionally, students can now ask Search to create learning documents based on uploaded files such as PDFs, docs, and slides. For example, you can upload photos of your handwritten notes along with your lecture slides to get an overview document that outlines key concepts.

As for new features in Gemini, Google is launching the ability for students to create multi-step research reports and discuss their results conversationally in Gemini Live.

Users can ask Gemini to research a topic and close the chat or do other things while it works in the background. You’ll receive a notification when your report is ready, and you can use audio to discuss your findings or ask additional questions.

The tech giant also announced that Gemini can now generate functional 3D simulations to help users better understand topics, as responses will now include tables, grids, and simulations created specifically for the prompts. For example, you can interactively rotate and zoom a 3D DNA structure by typing a prompt like “See how DNA works in 3D.”

Google is also launching a dedicated hub within the Gemini app that brings learning tools together in one place. Users can start study notes, create flashcards, take practice quizzes, and more within the hub.
