President Donald Trump on Wednesday suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz, a central point in the war against Iran launched by the United States and Israel, after him.

The proposal, made via a Truth Social post, comes less than a week after President Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario “Lake of the Americas” amid an escalating feud with Canada.

“Now that it is under U.S. control, should we change the name of the Strait of Hormuz to the Trump Strait?” Trump wrote in a post Wednesday morning.

“Like America itself, it will be ‘hotter’ than ever before! Thank you for your interest in this issue. President Donald J. Trump,” he wrote.

It was not immediately clear how the president intended to implement the strait’s renaming, but the order to rename Lake Ontario directed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and his departments to update the Geographic Name Information System with the new name. Google and Apple recently updated their maps, although Canada rejected the change. At the beginning of his second presidential term, President Trump vowed to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, a move rejected by Mexico and other international nations. The United States borders Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico, both of which have been named for centuries.

President Trump and his administration have repeatedly maintained that Iran lost control of the strait, which carried a fifth of global oil trade before the war began in late February.

But traffic through the waterway remains well below pre-war levels, and ship trackers say it has fallen further in recent days as military strikes in the region resumed after a weeks-long hiatus.

The Trump administration claims that total oil exports from the region are now higher than before the war began, including in the tally the Saudi and United Arab Emirates pipelines that bypass Hormuz.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNBC on Wednesday that more than 17 million barrels of oil passed through the Strait on Monday, a new wartime record. Before the war began on February 28, about 20 million barrels of crude oil and products per day passed through the strait.
