Tesla teases “no steering wheel or pedals” ahead of CyberCab update

Tesla’s The fledgling robotaxi business teased fans with a post on X that said it had “no steering wheel or pedals,” a reference to the company’s upcoming CyberCab driverless vehicle. Another post encouraged riders in Austin, Texas, to “try it out,” while CEO Elon Musk said in a pinned post that it was “a storm in cyber cabs.”

Those comments Wednesday come ahead of a planned event in Austin, where Tesla is expected to announce more details about the CyberCab on Thursday. The company unveiled the vehicle’s design almost two years ago.

Musk’s automaker is designing the CyberCab as an unmanned two-seater with butterfly doors and no steering wheel or pedals. The company has been testing versions of “private” robotaxis with human drivers and traditional controls in multiple markets across the United States.

New Street Research analyst Pierre Ferrag and Tesla fans also shared a video clip on X on Wednesday showing a CyberCab vehicle without a steering wheel or driver on a public road in Austin.

As Tesla looks to eat into Waymo’s large early lead, bullish investors expect the company to soon unleash a torrent of robotaxis in many U.S. cities.

Since at least 2016, Mr. Musk has been telling fans and investors that Tesla cars that can drive themselves around the country without human intervention are on the horizon. That hasn’t happened yet.

Tesla currently sells cars equipped with a system called FSD, which stands for Full Self-Driving (Supervised). A human driver must always be at the wheel and able to steer or brake at any time.

One Tesla robotaxi tracker estimates that Tesla’s U.S. fleet has just over 200 vehicles registered as “unsupervised” vehicles that can operate without a human driver, at least when allowed to operate in geofenced areas of certain cities.

Trackers say Tesla’s “unmonitored” vehicles have logged trips in cities including Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa, Florida.

Tesla also operates a charter car service in the San Francisco area called the FSD (Supervised) Rideshare service. According to Tesla’s terms of service, the vehicles included are new Model Y vehicles driven by Tesla employees, who use the company’s FSD (supervised) version, which is not yet available to the public. Passengers can hail the vehicle using a Tesla Robotaxi-branded app.

meanwhile, Google Waymo operates commercial robo-taxi services in 14 U.S. cities, has about 4,000 driverless vehicles on U.S. roads, and is testing in other markets.

A note ahead of the expected Cybercab update states: morgan stanley Analysts said they expect Tesla stock to “regain momentum” if this event “includes a meaningful deployment of unsupervised vehicles.” Tesla stock has fallen about 21% since the beginning of the year as of Wednesday’s close.

But analysts said if the event’s excitement is weak, the market reaction will be muted or negative. Morgan Stanley has a $400 price target on Tesla, equivalent to a hold rating.

“Continued growth in unsupervised vehicles (CyberCab or Model Y) will be key for the stock to outperform through year-end,” the analysts wrote.

As of Wednesday night, Tesla had 45 CyberCab vehicles approved for driverless operation in Texas, out of a total of 420 vehicles registered for self-driving in the state, according to public records posted on the Texas Department of Transportation’s website.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating Tesla in at least two ongoing investigations into possible safety flaws in its partially self-driving system. Tesla has also been criticized for asking NHTSA to redact far more information from crash reports than other AV companies, effectively hiding safety data from the public.
