You can now manage your Google Photos library with Google’s Gemini Spark

Google is integrating many of its services with AI, announcing that Gemini Spark, its personal agent, can now manage your Google Photos library. This means you can ask Gemini Spark to perform tasks within Google Photos, such as editing images, curating albums, automatically creating shared albums with your favorite shots, turning photos from concert flyers into calendar events, and running workflows.

On Thursday evening, Google Photos head Shimrit Ben-Yair shared the new feature in a post on X, saying the new feature will roll out in English to eligible Gemini AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US in the coming weeks.

The company did not say whether or when it would expand to broader international markets.

This addition is another example of Google trying to find product-market fit in terms of making AI attractive to consumers. In this case, by automating tedious tasks and helping people manage their now often large photo libraries.

This move comes at a time when the AI ​​industry is considering the fact that it is not adequately selling the promise of AI to consumers. This week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Bloomberg that the industry has done a “terrible job” of communicating the benefits of the technology, prompting backlash from communities around the world.

Announcements like this from Google are part of the problem. These features may make certain tasks easier, but on their own I don’t think they’re innovative or really necessary. (Creating a photo album isn’t all that difficult, after all.) But the competitive nature of the AI ​​industry is pushing companies to push forward with every upgrade that incorporates AI, no matter how small, rather than waiting until they can tell a broader story about how AI has shaped their software for the better.
