President Trump says MAGA will spend up to $500 million on 2026 midterm elections

President Donald Trump said Friday he plans to spend up to $500 million from his political campaign to help Republicans with about two months until the November midterm elections.

“I think I have close to a billion dollars in super PACs, and I’m probably going to allocate $400 million or $500 million,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “We’re going to spend a lot of money because we don’t want to lose our country.”

Republicans, facing fierce House and Senate races, have been waiting for Trump’s MAGA political action committee to increase spending. Some Republican officials and strategists were reportedly growing concerned that the massive war chest would remain on the sidelines.

According to the Federal Election Commission’s latest report, MAGA reported $403.45 million in cash on hand as of July 31, less than half of the “nearly $1 billion” that President Trump said was available. The group has modestly spent about $21 million since the beginning of 2025, including $1.7 million in independent spending.

Still, the MAGA Inc. PAC’s funding is larger than the cash reserves of major party committees, according to the Associated Press. The group has begun work in battleground states, paying for an event in Michigan this week headlined by Vice President J.D. Vance, but it has yet to commit anywhere near the amount outlined by President Trump on Friday, less than two months before the election.

Heading into November, President Trump said he would personally consider where to direct his aid, including to Republican candidates he believes can win competitive races.

“We’re going to spend whatever money it takes to help us,” Trump said. “This is my money that I manage.”

This money is not President Trump’s personal money. The FEC lists MAGA Inc. as an “unauthorized” hybrid PAC. This means the company is not soliciting donations on behalf of specific candidates. Its “non-contribution accounts” accept unlimited donations and can fund independent spending supporting or opposing candidates, but those funds cannot be donated directly to candidates.

President Trump also said he expects the money will remain after November and be available for use in 2028. Federal rules do not require MAGA Inc. to draw down its current balance and allow the group to keep funds for political activities in future elections or other authorized uses.

Friday’s spending pledge builds on President Trump’s stated plan to become more involved in the final days of the midterm elections. He said Wednesday that he would be making “a lot of stops” campaigning for Republican House and Senate candidates, pledging to go to Alaska to support Sen. Dan Sullivan.

“I’m going to help a lot of congressmen and senators who need help,” President Trump said Friday.
