Dow Jones Industrial Average Futures Stocks fell on Monday to begin a shortened trading week as Wall Street monitored wars in the Middle East and rising trade tensions between Canada and the United States.

Futures tracking 30 stocks fell an average of 308 points, or 0.6%. S&P500 futures It fell 0.2%. Nasdaq 100 futures It bucked the trend and rose 0.1%. (U.S. markets were closed on Monday due to the Labor Day holiday.)

Oil prices rose to a six-week high Monday night after Iran and the United States exchanged strikes over the weekend. brent It traded 1.1% higher at $97.31 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate Futures It rose 1.3% to $92.66.

Oil prices have soared in the past month as the U.S. war with Iran continues, putting upward pressure on U.S. Treasury yields as traders worry that higher energy prices will push up inflation.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose last week to its highest level since November 2023, while the short-term two-year Treasury yield rose to its highest level in January 2025.

“Several central bank meetings in the coming weeks will test whether equities remain calm,” said Ed Yardeni, president of Yardeni Research. “Globally, bond yields are also rising. The question is whether they reflect stronger-than-expected economic growth, higher-than-expected inflation, and a looming fiscal debt crisis.”

The Federal Reserve is scheduled to hold a monetary policy meeting next week. Traders are pricing in a 60% chance that the central bank will raise rates by a quarter of a percentage point after the meeting, according to CME Group’s FedWatch tool.

Those odds could change this week as wholesale and consumer inflation statistics are released on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Furthermore, amid rising tensions in the Middle East, oil prices could rise again, which could have an impact.

Traders will also have to contend with renewed trade tensions between the United States and Canada. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. goods go into effect Tuesday. President Donald Trump said Monday, ahead of new tariffs, that Canadian aircraft maker Bombardier cannot sell in the United States unless Canada begins manufacturing its products there.

“Bombardiers are no longer selling in the US!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
