Trade tensions are escalating as Canada fights U.S. tariffs on a dollar-for-dollar basis, impacting 700 products and multiple industries.

Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on goods imported from the United States, intensifying the trade dispute between the two countries.

Starting Tuesday at 12:01 a.m. ET (4:01 GMT), tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% will be applied to $20 billion worth of U.S. imports, comparable to the tariffs the U.S. imposes on Canadian products, including machinery, textiles and consumer products.

The new retaliatory tariffs will apply to products such as steel, home appliances, agricultural machinery and dairy products.

“To protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses, Canada will respond dollar-for-dollar to Washington’s new tariffs,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters in late August.

US President Donald Trump announced in July that he would impose 50% tariffs on Canada, citing “discriminatory treatment” of American products. The announcement prompted the countries to enter trade talks in August, but no final agreement was reached by the deadline imposed by President Trump.

“Canada wants the benefits of being a nation, not a nation!!!” President Trump posted on Truth Social in response to Canada’s announcement in August.

The Canadian government said in a statement that the counter-tariffs will affect more than 700 products, adding that it is launching a $5.42 billion support package for affected small businesses and workers.

On the eve of Ottawa’s tariffs, President Trump threatened to block Canadian-based aircraft manufacturer Bombardier from selling its planes in the United States unless it began manufacturing planes domestically.

The dispute extends beyond tariffs, with President Trump signing an order last month renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” for U.S. federal use.

Retaliatory tariffs could place an economic burden on U.S. automakers, since Canada is the largest purchaser of U.S.-made vehicles.

Americans will soon see prices for 550 consumer goods from Canada rise. According to a report by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, U.S. importers and consumers bear 96 percent of the tariff burden.
