The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose above 4.8% at one point as oil prices rose ahead of key inflation data due later this week.

key 10 year Treasury bill Benchmark yields for mortgages, auto loans and credit rose and fell above that threshold throughout the session. The highest price reached 4.812% and the close price was 4.786%. It reached a high of 4.818% on September 2, the highest level since November 2023.

longer date 30 year bond The yield, which often fluctuates in response to geopolitical events, was flat at 5.239%.

yield of 2 year Treasury billThe rate, which is more sensitive to short-term Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, rose more than 1 basis point to 4.396%.

One basis point is equal to 0.01%, or 1/100th of 1%, and yield and price are inversely proportional to each other.

The moves come amid soaring oil prices, with Brent crude oil futures hovering around $99 a barrel on Tuesday amid escalating fighting in the Middle East. West Texas Intermediate futures recently hovered above $94 per barrel.

Oil prices have soared ahead of wholesale and consumer inflation data to be released on Thursday and Friday, respectively, with investors hoping for clarity on the interest rate outlook.

The producer price index is expected to rise 5.4% in August from a year ago, according to FactSet consensus estimates. This comes after a preliminary report showed wholesale costs of goods and services rose by 4.7%.

The consumer price index is expected to rise 3.3% in August from a year ago, according to FactSet. This is a slight respite from the 3.4% increase seen in the prior survey.

Much focus has been placed on the fate of monetary policy, especially after August’s strong non-farm payrolls data increased confidence that the Fed would raise interest rates after next week’s meeting.

The market last priced in a 59% chance that the central bank would raise interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point, according to the CME FedWatch tool.
