Hello, this is Leonie Kidd from London. Welcome to another edition of CNBC’s Daily Open.

In most cases, they are arch-rivals trying to outdo each other in the most important field since the Internet.

But in a rare moment, the heads of Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI came together to endorse the view that development of AI models should slow down amid growing concerns about the technology’s ability to cause harm.

But President Donald Trump has no intention of giving up America’s place in the AI race.

What you need to know today

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on AI companies, including his own, to slow the breakneck pace of model development, which has raised serious concerns about the safety of the technology. In an essay published Saturday, he warned that it would be “unwise to build too soon.”

Rivals at a rare truce

Leaders at Anthropic’s main rivals, OpenAI and xAI, are quick to lend support.

Elon Musk responded to an essay on X by saying, “Dario is right.” Separately, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also told X: “I agree with Dalio that we need to set the pace on the frontier.”

China’s dilemma

But Amodei also acknowledged that the “toughest dilemma” about his proposal to slow the development of AI is if other countries, namely China, choose not to follow suit.

And this concern has been amplified by US President Donald Trump. During a visit to Ireland, he largely rejected calls from AI executives, saying: “Look, we’re leading China in AI…and frankly, whoever wins in AI wins, so I want to keep it that way.”

This is a big week for central banks, with the Federal Reserve beginning a two-day policy meeting on Tuesday, the Bank of England meeting on Thursday, and the Bank of Japan concluding on Friday.

The decision comes as the yield on the 10-year US Treasury note approaches 5%. Stock futures on Wall Street fell in early trading Monday, while stocks across Asia were mixed ahead of European trading.
