OpenAI, Google, Anthropic discuss cooperation on AI safety issues

OpenAI Anthropic googlea spokesperson confirmed to CNBC on Tuesday about how they can work together to address safety concerns.

Discussions have been ongoing since Google DeepMind Chairman Demis Hassabis published a proposal in July calling for the creation of a U.S.-led “standards body,” a spokesperson said. Hassabis published an essay on X in which he proposed creating a federally supervised public-private partnership or self-regulatory organization similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are fierce competitors, but these companies have faced intense pressure in recent weeks to address growing concerns about AI safety and security. On Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged AI companies to slow down the rate at which they improve their cutting-edge models, a move that Hassabis and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised.

“Dalio’s essay points us to the right path forward,” Hassabis said in a post on X. “Details need to be worked out, but the direction is right to address this critical moment.”

Altman said he agrees with Amodei about the need to keep pace with the industry’s cutting-edge models. In a post on X, he said the economic slowdown has been a “key theme” of discussion at OpenAI in recent weeks and that the company will share more “soon.”

The Information earlier reported talks between the two companies. Google and Anthropic did not immediately respond to CNBC’s requests for comment.

Earlier this month, Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s chief international affairs officer, published a blog post saying that OpenAI is committed to promoting “industry-driven standards.” He said the company would work with other companies on voluntary efforts “with or without government support.”

“Industry-driven standards should complement, not replace, the federal government’s mandatory safeguards and democratic oversight,” Lehane said. “But we are at a different stage of AI capabilities, and everything needs to be on the table, including looking at what can be built voluntarily outside of government as an immediate step.”
