Israel and Morocco have agreed to strengthen diplomatic relations, upgrading their respective missions to embassies and appointing ambassadors to both countries.

The bilateral foreign ministers’ meeting was held in New York on Wednesday, hosted by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Walz.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita also agreed to advance economic and trade relations, including completing two agreements on investment protection and double taxation prevention by the end of this year.

“Establishing full diplomatic, peaceful and friendly relations between Morocco and Israel is in the common interests of both countries and will advance the cause of peace,” the US mission to the UN said in a joint statement on behalf of the three countries.

The two countries also agreed to expand air travel, including the resumption of direct flights between their airlines, and confirmed plans for high-level bilateral visits in the coming months.

The announcement came just a day after the sixth anniversary of the Abraham Accords, an initiative spearheaded by US President Donald Trump during his first term in office. The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan and Kazakhstan are all part of the agreement aimed at normalizing relations between Israel and Arab and Muslim-majority countries.
