Hello, this is Leonie Kidd from London. Welcome to another edition of CNBC’s Daily Open.

For now, the AI will be grading your own assignments.

The leaders of the six largest tech groups agreed to develop their own security measures, a victory for the Trump administration.

However, the signatories also acknowledged that “over time, it may make sense to codify these measures into laws and regulations.”

What you need to know today

The heads of six of the most important American companies in the AI field (namely Google, Meta, Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic, Tesla, and SpaceX) have signed a document called the “White House Consensus on Superintelligence.”

The agreement outlines that the signatories “believe that all companies have a responsibility to develop their technologies in a secure and trust-building manner.”

Technology leaders agreed to meet regularly to put in place “robust internal processes and controls to ensure technology operates as intended.”

But over time, he added, “it may make sense to codify these steps into laws and regulations.”

The move comes after President Donald Trump also signed an executive order ordering all government departments to use the term “superintelligence” instead of artificial intelligence.

IPO delay

OpenAI has said it will stay with the AI and release it only when the time is right, and the group is “confident in its safety decisions.”

CNBC’s Kate Rooney spoke with OpenAI DevDay 2026’s Sam Altman to discuss safety concerns and the company’s anticipated plans to go public. Read the full interview here.

OpenAI isn’t the only company delaying its IPO plans. Biometric ring maker Oura also postponed its listing, citing “uncertain” market conditions.

Treasury tensions

When September ends

Wednesday is the last day of September and the third quarter. Market performance is mixed on both time frames. This month, the S&P 500 and Dow are tracking declines, while the Nasdaq is up more than 1%. For the quarter, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq rose 2%, while the Dow fell nearly 2%.

Futures are inching higher on Wednesday on generally positive deliveries from Asia.

Goldman Sachs’ CEO succession plan faces one big problem

Goldman Sachs is currently at the top of Wall Street, advising on more than $1 trillion in merger deals and generating more than $12 billion in stock proceeds in the first six months of this year alone.

These records make it all the more shocking that Goldman’s board is reportedly discussing replacing CEO David Solomon, 64, with President John Waldron, 57, as early as next year.

The Wall Street Journal reported late Monday that a succession plan that would elevate Solomon to executive chairman could be voted on by the bank’s board in the coming months.
