Jim Cramer: Diversification is key as AI stocks plummet

According to CNBC’s Jim Cramer, Thursday’s selloff in artificial intelligence stocks was a reminder of why diversification is essential to staying invested during market volatility.

Tech stocks came under pressure after the Financial Times reported that: OpenAI Annual revenue was approximately $20 billion below previously announced amounts. oracle down 5.5%, broadcom It fell by 4.35%. On the other hand, stock prices other than AI are sluggish, and the following stocks are being traded. home depotrose as U.S. Treasury yields fell following a strong 30-year bond auction. Cramer’s Charitable Trust, a portfolio managed by CNBC’s investment club, owns shares in Broadcom and Home Depot.

“Today would have been a nightmare if all I had was artificial intelligence stocks,” the “Mad Money” host said.

The danger with concentrated portfolios, Cramer explained, is that large losses can cause investors to panic, sell their holdings for cash, and miss out on any subsequent recovery. He argued that a diversified portfolio cushions losses when a particular investment theme hits, making it easier to stay invested.

The cost of missing out on a market rebound can be significant. According to JPMorgan, an investor who put $10,000 into this investment would S&P500 If you had missed the 10 best trading days from 2005 to 2024, you would have had less than half the wealth of someone who remained fully invested.

That’s why Kramer said it’s important to own stocks outside of the market’s most popular sectors, even if stocks like Home Depot are a pain to own. Home improvement retailer stocks have struggled for years as rising interest rates weigh on housing activity and consumer spending. However, Thursday’s rally helped offset the weakness in AI trading and showed how different parts of the market can perform well at different times.

“Do you know how much I hated owning a hardware store?” Kramer said. “The answer is, as much as I loved the game today, because on days like this it helps me focus on the game.”

For Kramer, that’s the ultimate goal of diversification. It’s not necessarily about outperforming every day, it’s about preventing a bad day in one sector from driving investors out of the market altogether.

“When I started this show 22 years ago, my goal was and still is simple,” he said. “I want you to stay in the game. The only real way to do that is diversification. You can’t stay in the game without it.”
